I have two 8320 Curves which both began having battery issues about the same time. I bought two batteries (yes, they are the correct batteries), updated the operating system on both, and now one of them works fine and the other continues to not hold a charge for over about 20 minutes.

Any ideas?

If one battery works fine and the other does not with everything being the same charger, cords etc then you have a bad battery. return it...

See what apps you have running on the one that's having the battery issue. Press and hold ALT then hit the back button. Close all the apps and see if the problem stops. Just a reminder that's hitting the back key does not close the app. You have to press the menu key and hit close.

Is the battery problem unique to one specific phone? Try swapping the batteries and see if the problem follows with the battery or if one particular phone is the culprit.
