My BB shuts down when I am on extended calls. I either have to plug in the charger or pull out the battery and then put it back in again.

It is not the battery (I have 2 of them). Does anyone know of a known bug and possible remedy?

It does sound like the battery, actually...

Just the fact that it works when you have it on a charger says volumes. The batteries aren't able to supply the required power that the phone is needing. Also, if you are in a low signal area the BB will need more power to send out a signal to the tower.
