Default 8300 in Europe?

I've got an older Curve from Tmobile, an 83XX. Going to Europe next month. I remember reading that I could use it there by getting a local SIM card, with prepaid minutes as long as I had a current Tmobile account. Then I could use my Tmobile minutes via WiFi using UMA and not pay the outrageous rates. Does anyone have any recollection as to how I do that? Do I need the phone unlocked? I forget how it works, sorry. And thanks in advance for help.
