I am looking to upgrade to 4.5 but I have a few 3rd party themes that were designed for 4.2, and I'm wondering if the upgrade will cause them not to work anymore? I can't seem to find an answer anywhere.

Im not quite sure. I know i had 2 that where designed for 4.2 and they worked fine on my phone, but you know how these berrys are

Haha yeah, I guess I will just have to do the upgrade and then see if they still work

Iu downlaoded one theme for 4.2 then upgraded to 4.3 and then again to 4.5 all with no issues. Although I can't promise the same results for you but worked for me. BERRY ON!
