The 8707 is a 3G berry. It is a GSM device. Unfortunately, the GSM radio is tri-band, like thre GSM side of the World Phone. Meaning, not able to be used in the US.
The only Blackberry phone that is/will be 3G capable is/will be certain models of the as yet unreleased 9000 series - look at the 9000 forum in Crackberry.
There is no reason why a 2G phone cannot use a 3G network. It will just carry on doing 2G stuff cuz it don' know no better.
All CDMA Blackberries are 3G dagnabit! Leave it at that. Look at it this way, by the time all the US GSM carriers finally make it to 3G "everywhere" Verizon's going to be deploying 4G LTE.
