Probably not. Sprint is phasing out Nextel anyway. Sprint Nextel aims to phase out push-to-talk iDEN network by 2013 - FierceMobileIT

Recent Sprint roadmap leaks show that a new Push To Talk Blackberry will be here in Q3.

Not to worry, because RIM is bringing its Bold Touch and Monaco handsets to the carrier, plus a push-to-talk BlackBerry, too.
Sprint's 2011 Q3 roadmap leaks, gives a glimpse of our smartphone future?

It will be CDMA, though, not iDEN. Sprint Direct Connect will replace iDEN with CDMA, launch late this year -- Engadget

The iDEN network does not appear to have a future.

Guess it will be a lot like the Verizon PTT feature then?!?!?!

From what I understood reading other articles, new 3G push to talk phones will be compatible with existing iDEN phones. It's not clear it will be improved version of qchat, but I remember reading that Nextel plans to release 3G push to talk phone and also plans to make it compatible to international iDEN networks (Mexico, Chile, etc).

Fingers crossed that it will be a good one. I like blackberry, but really iDEN 8350i isn't really the best one out there.

I'm hanging on to this 8350i Boostberry setup as long as possible - the price is unbeatable. I'm down to $45/month now for unlimited everything (slow data speed but I don't need 3G).

That's the bottom line. For what you pay, this is the best phone/network combination on the market.

Now I hope that someone discovers and publishes another combo like this, once the Boostberry's are obsolete.

I've been giving this a lot of thought lately. The iDen network will be phased out in 2013. I am not sure if this will come in the form of steadily reduced coverage as towers are dropped one by one and subscribers leave the network as steadily reduced coverage ceases to meet their needs or in the form of a single date when a switch is thrown.

As of right now, there appears to be no direct replacement path that will give you the capabilities of the 8350i on the boost CDMA network for this price. You can pay $5 a month more and get a boost CDMA android phone, or $10 a month more and get a boost CDMA blackberry.

Add to this continuing questions about whether RIM in its present form will outlast the nextel shutdown in 2013 and it leaves us with a lot of unanswered questions.

Just talking about this again this morning with someone... if Boost keeps the Monthly Unlimited Shrinkage price plans, I'll likely see if they will switch me over to Sprint CDMA and hopefully there will be a good used smartphone available by 2013. I'll be at $35/month by then for unlimited everything (although not broadband speed data obviously, but I don't need it) and no other company can match that deal.

You're right, it is an unbelievable deal. Looking at sprint's website, essentially it is a third of the cost of their unlimited talk text and web plan. If you are a two cell phone family it is the difference between 70 a month and 220 a month.

If any Boost user (who is reading this thread) makes the switch to Sprint and keeps the Unlimited plan with a CDMA phone... post up and let us know the details!
