Default Sensational: HTML now supported by Shangmail

I hope I am not the only one who thinks this is sensational, but I was trying for quite a while to get this to work.
I have tried BBSmart and empower html, which worked moderate for me. They displayed some pictures, but not real html emails like you would see in outlook or similar.

Today I sent an email to Shangmail support, and they told me they had a new version out, namely 4.8.1, which supports html. It's only available on the chinese site, and after a while of trial and error I found the download link. Its Here:

尚邮VIP

Just click on the two scroll down fields and enter your device info. I choose the 9000 as the 9700 is not listed. Then click the orange button, and your download opens.

I have then deleted my old Shangmail version from my device. Important: You have to delete your "binded" email accounts from Shangmail before you delete Shangmail from your device. If you fail to do this you are apparently not able to bind the same email accounts into your new Shangmail account.

Once deleted I uploaded version 4.8.1 via desktop manager.
You have to register new, as your old login won't work. They have changed the username to your actual phone number instead. I have chosen a different random number instead, which worked. Once logged in, you automatically get an email adress assigned, which is 'your number'@shangmail.com.

You are of course also able to bind your other email accounts, and like in version 1.0.0 you can also bind your custom accounts (which you couldn't in 4.4.1).

In settings -> configuration you can then enable html!!! There are also some more new features, like "Bcc mself by sending" and a few others that might come in handy.

Html obviously only works for emails that you receive after installation, so send yourself a few test emails.
The first thing I noticed though was that it now takes second or two to open an email, even your old emails. i am not sure why that happens, but I will follow up with Shangmail as this is a bit concerning.

Now to html: The emails display exactly like they would in outlook, with all pictures, graphics, links, they got the same web page look like your normal newsletter. I never had that with empower or BBSmart. They look absolutely great, but take quite a while to load completely.

I also noticed on the Shangmail opening screen that it says "Expiration date: 2010-01-21". What happens afterwards? Will follow up with Shangmail too.

Is anyone else running 4.8.1 yet? What are your findings?
Am looking forward to more ideas and fixes.

Thanks,
Florian

After going thru the Shangmail site on the laptop and using the translation page from Bing, it appears this is only a trial version. This is what the translator gave me when I registered today:
"You are a trial products are: Elite Edition trial expiration date is: podkorytov-01-15 you can also use: 9 days"

It may be best to use the 4.5.1 version.

Follow peryp9 instructions for COMPLETE shangmail setup:

Many thanks for PERYP9 hard work on this!!!

The Shangmail BIBLE for BOOST users:
-----------------------------------------------
If you didn't realize it yet, with the newest 8350i BB Firmware version (.313) you can SEND e-mail attachments using the Shangmail program. I finally have a full working BB on Boost. Also, now I can reply or forward long e-mails... with previous BB firmwares I would get my radio connection reseted and the message would not go through.
-------
Here is what you should do to stop the NETWORK ERROR message:
---------------------------------------
Go to Shangmail/ Settings/ Accounts and select "Delete Account"
-------
Go to Settings and select "Reset"
-------
Do a battery pull, wait 2-5 minutes and reboot BB.
-------
Download the Chinese version of Shangmail directly from your phone (OTA) ... posted above, in my previous post (if you don't have it already).
------
Go to Shangmail and select "Register" ... create a new user name and password... Make sure you have selected "CMNET" in the register menu.
------
After you log in, "BIND" your e-mail address to this new account...
Make sure you did the first step or you will not be able to add the same e-mail address to 2 different Shangmail accounts !!! You will get the "Account exist" error and you would have to log back into previous Shangmail account and then delete from there...
------
If you use a G-MAIL address, you can get all your other e-mails to be forwarded to your BB... Log in from your computer to the G-MAIL account, go to settings and use the POP3 servers to extract e-mails from other accounts...
You can even get your Yahoo e-mails, if in the Yahoo settings you change your Time Zone to Asia. After you make this change, you will see the POP/Forwarding option activated in the Yahoo settings. From there, get your POP3 server addresses and put them in the G-MAIL Account so you can get the e-mails to your BB.
-------
You can also use the "Download" option to get the attachment to your phone from the e-mail received.
To get the downloaded location of attachments to a convenient folder (on your SD card) go to Shangmail/ Settings/ Configuration go down to Attachment Storage, click BB Menu button and select "Modify"... Go to a folder on your SD Card.
--------
To Upload/send attachments with the e-mail, click the BB Menu button and select "Add Attachment" then select the file you want to send.
Don't select "Attach File" or "Attach Contact" because those options don't work.
--------
After months of headaches and research, I managed to get my BB working properly on the Boost Network... Follow this and you won't have any more problems.
-------
Here is the Chinese version of the program:

I went back and forth from English>Chinese>English>Chinese, trying to find out the best. English- you will get the dreaded "network error". BUT ALAS i was getting that on the Chinese version. Tried 4.8.1 with my phone number last week and could never login from the phone. Finally gave up and back to Chinese version. Chinese has the silly signature you cannot remove.

Also if you go to wap.shangmail.com on BB (for 4.8.1) you can chose OS.

I had never trouble with the "network error" in any version. Used to run chinese, then went to english as I could use my custom email address (@directbox.com) there. The only trouble i always had with my custom email was the "wrong mail format" error (see here:http://forums.crackberry.com/f35/wro...ngmail-397126/).

I love the idea of 4.8.1, using html and a few other features. But the speed seems to get on my nerves. It just takes too long to open any email, up to three seconds. Not sure why that happens. Would be interested to know if that happens to other users as well.

Have sent my requests off to Shangmail support last night, but no reply yet. It's funny, whenever I send them a request to which they have an easy answer they respond in literally 3 minutes, but when I get more into detail I usually never get a reply at all. Anyone else experienced that?

Grantwelch - Did you register with your phone number from your phone? How come you couldn't log in then?

Delrahim - thanks, somehow missed that last night. Will reinstall the correct version, but doubt to be honest that it will make any difference. worth a try though.

Florian

They reply after a long time if you send them a long message because the Bing.com website doesn't give them an accurate translation... Hahhaha :-)))
It's great that they have a new version of Shangmail, and that it has HTML support, but what's the use if it expires?
I believe it's the phone itself that takes a long time to display HTML pages. I don't think the 3 second delay that you mentioned previously has anything to do with Shangmail since that's just the carrier of the data. It's the phone that's taking too long to convert the data received into HTML format. I'm not sure if you noticed, but when you get a long, long e-mail message with lots of text, you can't really scroll down for the first second or two. Same concept of slow phone that takes time to display all the information.
For now, I'm staying with Shangmail Chinese ver 4.5.1, unless I could somehow buy the new version with a ONE TIME FEE, without monthly charges. If they don't have this option, then it's NOT worth it for anyone to switch over or buy.

Hey Peryp, what I meant was that the whole email client seems to have slowed down, it takes even three seconds to get into old, very short and non-html emails. I could understand if it were only the html emails that were slow, but it's all of them.
As I write, I just got a response from Shangmail. Seems like they got Bing.com working now...:

Hi sir:

You use this version is the Charge version, it is 15 days of free trial period default. If you want to continue to use, you need to pay for use, 15 RMB per month. The new version is not very stable, maybe you feel it slower, we will gradually optimized.

Thank you for using ShangMail and looking forward to your respondence.

With our united kind regards, Yours sincerely ShangMail Team

15 RMB is AU$2.40 or US$2.20, so a bit less than 30 bucks a year. Well, honestly, If they would seriously improve the speed and ensure a constant stable and reliable service, I would consider.

Will try the 9700 version later today to see if there is any difference, and if not, i might go back to 1.0.0 for the time being, let's see.

Florian

4.5 (chinese version) is still free at the moment, but might get either charged or cut off eventually, or none of that, who knows.

It does not support HTML, with apps like empower or BBSmart you are able to get some pictures with your emails, but that's far from a real HTML email (at least I never got that to work using these apps).

If you have a non custom email account (gmail etc.) You should go with the english version 1.0.0.

Am back to the english version again. Everything works as fast as it used to. What a relief.
Will, however, test 4.8.1 in a few month time and check if performance has improved.
