New Phone won't read sim card

Hey guys, I'm a new blackberry user. I just got my phone that I ordered off of ebay. I tried starting the phone but it keeps coming up with an error that it can't read my sim card. I've looked around the forum and people have suggested I try unlocking it. When I go into the sim card option under the advanced menu it pulls up no data. It's supposed to show whether or not my device is active or not.

What can I do to get my phone working? I'm pulling my hair out

Double check the sim card is inserted according to the diagram on phone. Simple but often overlooked.
