Handset Jack help!

On my 8350i that has a 2.5mm handset port I want to be able to use my car stereo port which is the standard 3.5mm. I purchased an adapter from radio shack and nothing plays through the speakers. This is literally a brand new phone. I found an older post with this same issue but no real resolution. Was hoping to get some help :-/ Thanks in advance!
