No it does not. I have been trying to get a developer to write me one for the last year. It is very annoying.

So where would be a good place to put in a request for this type of application.

If anyone else is interested in having a db meter application add your approval here as well please.

Hold the alt key type type NNML

this turns the signal meter from bar to db

that is the signal strength meter on the phone, I am looking for an application that tells you what the db or spl is of surrounding noise.

^^ Yup, that is exactly what I was after too. I even made some screen drawings and sent them to a couple of developers. It seems that the RIM API does not currently support some of the neccessary functions.

I would love such an app and would pay for it too.

Db = decibel
Spl = sound pressure level

i do believe that the two are different.

DB is how loud something is
SPL is the amount of air something moves

you usually use these in car audio sound offs. i know this because i hit a 146.6 Spl with 6 10n speakers, IN MY FORD RANGER!!!

i would think that the BBs mic could NOT handle either one. ,aybe thats why there is not an app out there

Decibel readings would come in handy for the fire guys, specially the inspectors.
Commercial fire alarms often require a certain db over ambient noise level from their audible alert devices.
At least, that's the only reason I've had for a db meter.

ok agreed but.....

your BB can NOT be used as a proving meter. it is not calibrated so you cannot use it as an "official meter"... if there was an app

Well, I'd have a hard time denying an occupancy based on a blackberry db meter. But approving one based on experience and informal information from my blackberry would be acceptable.
It is not required to to a decibel check, and the final line of that code states 'subject to AHJ'.
Formalities aside tho, I'm in agreement here. I would not use anything but a calibrated meter designed for such purposes.

Now, I could see me holding it next to my sleepin(snoring) spouse...

Or telling her that her last argument topped the db meter....(and then explaining to the medics that's how my blackberry got in my arse)

do you think that the phone has the power to do this? i mean wouldnt it take a lot of mem for such an app? and wouldnt an app like that make it slower?

An application that's not running just occupies memory. It doesn't slow down the Blackberry or any running programs. So other than the memory it used, such a program would be harmless to the BlackBerry or other apps.

I don't see why the blackberry couldn't do this. My old windows mobile phone could do it just fine. I mean I'm sure it wasn't 100 percent accurate but better than nothing.
