Default 8350i error 507 when updating OS

i was recently updating my OS to the new 5.0 and got the 507 error, i read through the forums and found a lot of people trying a lot of different unsuccessful things, mostly ending up at sprint to get the problem fixed, theres a simple solution. actually two very simple solutions, for those impatient people i will tell you the solutions first then explain afterwards.
1. use a different computer
2. attach a usb hub
noone evre mentioned the brand computers they were using, and i happen to own an emachine. emachine and gateway computers use crappy usb host drivers. i found this out after 11 hours on tech support trying to get a vinyl cutter working that worked on all my other computers. after spending about 300.00 on plotter internal parts i simply tried using my sons usb hub and thats all it took. well after nearly pooping my pants when trying to update my 8350 i calmed down and remembered what fixed my plotter problem and the same thing fixed my update problem. i was told that gateway and emachine do not leave much open in the way of comm ports and this causes a lot of conflicts at certain points. i found it strange that my BB communicated fine with my computer for everything else but updating the OS it even swapped out the service books just fine but wouldnt update the OS for nothing. just food for thought hopefully this helps save a lot of you some time resolving this issue.

Personally, I use a program to brick my phone to the error 507 screen, then go on the blackberry website directly to download the propper version, remove the vendor.xml file and install it via desktop manager. Oh and I never ever use a usb hub, I get nothing but problems with those things anyways.

sometimes a usb hub is the only answer to conflict resolution. i only advise a usb hub if you are having problems updating from the desktop manager. and get stuck in the process when the device stops communicating. this advice will save someone hours of research. it gets the job done.

I am not familiar with your issue with the USB ports on an eMachine.

While perhaps that is the answer in your set of circumstances, in my experience that is not the issue in at least 99% of times users have difficulty loading an OS.

1. Don't use Desktop Manager to load an OS. It is phenomenal how often this is the issue for users. As the other member above posted, download the OS and install it on your PC, then load it to your devcice.
See my instructions in Post #2 of this thread:
http://forums.crackberry.com/f137/ne...c-amea-599860/

2. The problem might be the browser you're using on your PC. For some reason some users experience some type of corruption when downloading anything directly from RIM (ie the official BB site) using Firefox or Chrome. I'm a diehard FF fan, but unfortunately I fall into this category. (I also have the issue with Adobe updates.) I had to uninstall DM and re-download it, and the same with OS's. I now keep my "default" browser as IE just because of DM and Adobe auto-updates.

3. Carrier's store or tech support staff won't be much help. It is rare that a user's issue is actually hardware-based. Unless the issue was ultra-basic, the store won't be any help. And tech support will offer little support too. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of members here that each possess greater BB troubleshooting than you will ever find from your carrier's tech support. The knowledge base here is unparalleled.

So your points are intriguing and do offer one more possibility for a user's OS-install problems. Always great to know of further possibilities, so thanks for that.
I just worried that people might come across this first and think this was the answer to their woes when in most cases it will be irrelevant.

yes it would be silly to assume that 300 some odd number of people with the exact same symptoms that occured at the exact same exact time during there adventure would be experiencing the same problems. ive tested this on my sons and my own emachine and my wifes gateway desktop computers, all of them froze at the same java install and went to the 507 screen. these are also the same computers that wil not run my vinyl cutter without a usb hub. on my hp tablet and my wifes dell laptop the OS installs perfectly from the web using the desktop software. with the usb hub it installs on all of the other computers as well. i would think it to be the wiser to attempt the 5 second fix than to save it for 9 hours later when nothing else worked. if the simple fix doesnt work then what have you got to lose. regardless the problem isnt in the desktop software or in the web update installer, plain and simple.

I don't understand the reference to "300 some odd number of people with the exact same symptoms..."

What exactly is taking 9 hours?

Well it seems like you've already figured everything out, and you just got here to CB. So I can't wait to see what future achievements you achieve as well. Godspeed!

the 300 some odd people with the same problem are the people on other forums that i use. it would be awful for someone to assume that i am new to this issue just because i have a new user name on CB, the 9 hours i am referring to is the time spent by the people installing new browsers on their PC's and and downloading the commander files that are potentially unnecessary to fix their problems. you may be the only one that didnt understand that. if your offended in some way i am truly sorry, i just happened to stumble across a very simple answer to a very complex problem. the only issue i answered is that the problem is not in the phone nor is it in the BB's web site.

I am not offended in any way. You obviously are willing to take your own time making posts here with the intention of helping others. For that you should be commended.

The problem is that you appear to lack the experience both to help others properly and to make the conclusions you have.
I don't know if 9 hours is how long you spent on this, or others that you know. If you, then clearly you are in no position to give guidance on such issues.

My problem isn't with your idea being a possible fix. Crazier things have happened.
My issue is you making it sound like this usb hub idea fixes everyone whose OS upgrade is failing and that such problems are never caused by the BB OS, the BB desktop software, and/or the way someone downloads their software.
Also it's ludicrous to insinuate it would take someone 9 hours or anywhere even close to that to fix their software.

If you didn't mean that, you need to choose your words more carefully.

Btw, did all "300" people with the issue on your "other forums" only solve their issues with a usb hub?

Go back, read your 1st 2 posts and my 1st post with an open mind.
