Default Using a non-BB SIM card

Hey All - Just a quick one. Has anyone used a non-BlackBerry data SIM in a BlackBerry handset (for the sake of discussion, I am using a UK 9300).
It seems that I am unable to use the 3G network for regular browsing (using Opera Mini, and Facebook Messenger for example). Is this normal?

You need an active BlackBerry Data Plan in order to use BlackBerry data features. This is normal.

Hi - Thanks for the response. So is 3G over the mobile network using BB data features? I thought that the BB data features where just the use of the BB browser, BBM, BB email etc.
