Yes. Backup files made with Desktop Manager only back up personal databases. These databases are compatible across all devices and OS versions.

As previously mentioned, this can be done easily. But, if you do encounter problems I would simply recommend to use the Blackberry Backup Extractor at blackberryconverter.com app to extract files to your computer. You can then import the files to your new BB with ease.

This may not be totally related but how about 9300 to 9380 using bb protect? Will that work? I'm thinking of switching to the touch screen 9380

That will work just fine also. The personal database files are compatible across all devices.
