Wiping and reloading my OS
My 9900 is about 10 months old, and I update it frequently as and when new OS's are leaked. For the last couple of month's I have suffered increasing battery drain which I have been unable to pinpoint, and also I get a frequent hourglass. It's appearance is random, sometimes several times a day and the phone is frozen for up to a minute while it happens.....
I am running 7.1.0.523 since it was leaked, but had the issue with previous OS too.
For my own peace of mind I want to wipe the phone totally and reload the same OS. I am 95% confident in doing this, but still slightly anxious!
BlackBerry 302: A complete wipe and clean install of your BlackBerry OS | CrackBerry.com
That seems to be the best guide? But I have a couple of questions...
1) Does BBSAK work ok on 7.1 now?
2) A back up on DM, will that save emails and settings on things like Password Keeper for example?
Thanks in advance

1) Yes it does, I just used it to backup my Bold 9900
2) Just select full backup and all the data should be saved.
When I update I usually backup 3rd party apps with BBSAK, wipe, and then do a clean install with Loader...Thanked by:quattrojames (07-21-2012)

Well you don't use DM if the OS isn't for the carrier you are using. Just navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader and lick on Loader. Or well you can just use BBSAK to install the OS using the Load OS option. Up to you.

Vendor files are already gone from the first time I installed the OS.
Anyone know if the back up will keep my themes? Or will I need to download them again?

You'll need to do a 3rd party backup to save the themes. Wiping, then reloading the same OS and database backup to me is a pointless exercise. If device analizer isn't pointing to the cause, I'd try running in safe mode for a day, and then change to a different OS, with a different platform number, if that didn't solve it. The issue is more likely signal.

If you are already using Desktop Manager there is no need to use BBSAK at all for this.

Be careful I tried to reload my OS and of course I crashed my phone. You are probably a lot smarter than I but ensure you do this when your phone carrier is open and has technical support people available.

Madman, over the course of time my phone has crashed many times. CrackBerry has always had the answer. Carrier support is not reliable at best. The greatest part of BB is solving the problem with a bit of help from friends around here. Be fearless and upgrade at will.

If it's sluggish, I'd recommend clearing all the unnecessary databases, after doing a backup, just in case you clear one you didn't want to. Other than that, it's either an app, which you can check by running the phone in safe mode, or the OS, and you'll have the same result installing it again.
Edit - If you really believe wiping is the answer, borrow a friend's PC or run Windows in boot camp.WAPers do it With A Passion

I have a Vodafone Sure Signal box at home. This uses a broadband phone line to give me 5 bars of 3G throughout my house, so the phone doesn't struggle for signal when I'm at home.
I haven't tried Safe Mode, I will do it and report back.
I see there's a new OS out today, so I'll perhaps try a wipe and reload it with that.
I just have, will see what happens.
How would I go about clearing these databases?64gb PlayBook is new to the fold! - 07-23-2012, 05:31 PM #18
I've seen reports that while a microcell helps a bunch, there are issues with using the internet for a signal, and battery drain problems as a result.
KB10167-How to clear the user content databases from the BlackBerry smartphone
Edit - I'll say it again......
There's no reason to wipe before loading the OS. It will be wiped between backing up the data/apps, and installing the new one.WAPers do it With A Passion

That's interesting about the microcell issue, in many ways the symptoms did begin when I got this. BUT the hourglass and battery issues are still problematic when I'm not at home.... The phone get switched to 2G only at those times.
So when I install a new OS, it totally wipes the phone first does it? I didn't know that.
I've been running in Safe Mode since first thing this morning. The phone has been snappier and I have had very minimal hourglassing, but it is usually ok for 12 hours or after a reboot, and then it gets worse. Interestingly, apps like Endomondo and Whatsapp still work, and it's only things like quickweather, BeBuzz/PopUp etc which don't work... why is this?
I'll keep monitoring and update. Thanks for your help
PS will do the database clear when I get 5 mins.Last edited by quattrojames; 07-24-2012 at 04:27 PM.

Used to be no apps would work, unless yo authorized them in safe mode. I'll have to tinker around, and see what works on my 9930.

Hopefully it's still running better. I can talk you through backing up all your apps, removing them, and then adding them back two at a time. Have seen where two apps have a conflict, especially with a custom theme, and simply deleting then reinstalling them resolved it.WAPers do it With A Passion

Nearly 72 hours running in safe mode now and I have had no hourglassing and a much improved battery! So it sounds like an app issue?
BigBadwulf - I could do with that help on backing up and reinstalling the apps when you can please.
I have a mad few days at work, but when I can I will delete these databases and upgrade to the new OS and work from there.
Thanks for your help.64gb PlayBook is new to the fold! - 07-26-2012, 03:12 PM #22
Awesomeness! Here's what you need to do for backup:
**Updated**How To Back-up 3rd Party Applications**Updated
Then you can remove them by opening Desktop again, Application Loader, check them all off and remove. Every time you want to add one back (I'd sugggest two at a time, then wait a day before more), open the same, browse to the alx file saved in the 3rd party backup folder, and they'll all pop up as available for install.WAPers do it With A Passion

Last night I rebooted into normal running mode. No hourglassing yet today, (it's normally ok for 12 or more hours anyway) but the battery was just as bad. So something that runs in normal mode but not in safe mode is draining the battery quickly - I assume that's one of the apps?
I've just downloaded the latest OS, I'll install it and remove a few apps sometime over the next few evenings.64gb PlayBook is new to the fold! - 07-28-2012, 08:04 PM #24
Well, at least you eliminated the apps that ran on safe mode from the equation.
