What do do first when you get a 9930?
Os install?
Battery charging method?
Option tweaks?
App tweaks?
Any ideas on what I should do first in order to be better productive and achieve the best battery life? I'll have this connected to BES.
thanks.

I'm having the same conundrum right now, trying to figure out what to do first (I'm in the middle of trading my 9850 for a 9930...decided I need a keyboard).
I'm gonna say wipe & load OS 7.1.0.342. I know .402 is out, but people are reporting some issues with it in other threads, so I'm gonna stick with the older one until a .5xx comes along any day now. Adjust the font, sensitivity, screen brightness, etc. to your preferred settings. Reload your contacts & calendar from the backup on DM. Set up your emails and reload your BBM contacts from backup, then go to app world & reinstall your apps. Evaluate them as you go - do you really use them all, or do you have a couple you've downloaded and used once five months ago? Don't bother reloading those, save the memory. Make sure you install BB Protect & activate it.
Put the phone on a charger and let it be overnight, to get your battery to 100%.Twitter.com/K9Carly - 07-15-2012, 09:50 AM #3
The first thing id did was install OS 7.1.0.523, ive heard more 'experienced' bold 9900 users say that the batterylife is really really great. As i have no previous experience with older OS'es all i can says is the batterylife is good, it gets me thru a the day and more.
After that i restored my backup file from my previous berry and reinstalled my appworld apps. - 07-15-2012, 11:22 AM #4
First thing I would do is load the OS you want then get all your contacts and calendar events all synched up.
Afterwards, if you are into themes, I'd install a theme that makes your blackberry well, yours. - 07-15-2012, 11:28 AM #5
The first thing you do is play!
Drain the battery going through every feature, app and option!
Also type...a lot. Don't know about everyone else, but my keys and trackpad squeaked for three weeks until worn in.
This isn't too helpful to your post, so here's some great basic apps to add to the functionality of your phone (in my humble opinion, of course!)
1. BlackBerry Traffic (GPS/maps...now with turn-by-turn voice nav!)
2. Poynt (though I hear they've gone bankrupt, so this may not be available much longer)
3. Quicklaunch

Return, exchange for a different handset or just throw it in the bin! The battery life on the 9900's suck!!!

1. Install the OS you want.
2. Device options and setting tweaks.
3. Install apps and adjust settings.
Don't worry about charging habits. Charge when needed. Your battery life will depend on usage habits and application usage. I have meduim to heavy usage on a daily basis. My battery life is good and bad, depends what I'm doing. Use BlackBerry Device Analyzer to monitor usage. - 07-16-2012, 09:25 AM #10
If you plan on a lot of email usage... check out Email++. The link is in my signature.
You can convert emails into Appointments, Meetings, Memos or Tasks. It has a killer toolbar that should be built into the native email. And you can have email pop ups where you can open or mark as read.Last edited by dustanh; 07-16-2012 at 09:30 AM.

Besides getting the app "Time for Tea" I purchased a leather case from PDAIR.COM
PDair BlackBerry 9900 Leather Case - Pocket Pouch Type (Black/Floater Pattern)
I like it a lot.
I'm new to the 9930 AND to Blackberry. I got here via Palm Treo 680, then Palm Treo Pro (windoze mobile) so I'm learning as much as I can. - 07-16-2012, 11:23 AM #12
Backup old blackberry.
Connect new blackberry and install the OS you want.
Decide which apps you need to survive.....: facebook/twitter/fourquare/beweather/bereader/ubertwitter/socialscope/whatsapp....etc.
Also accessorize and keep your new gadget in a protective case.@trinidoc on Twitter

What's the consensus best OS currently to throw on it? Also, I have a month before I can activate (since a month left on AT&T contract)..is there any use for this now? Can you use Wifi only? Thx.

.342 is the best so far with my experience.

If it came with 7.1 keep it for now. Use it, learn it and get comfortable. Sign in to BB ID, this will load all email addys from your previous BB (if applicable) pain free. I find the battery life more than acceptable on my 9930. Don't have a clue why others don't. Most of all enjoy the device. I have had mine for almost 1 year and am still very impressed!

Should the Menu button click differently then the other 3 in the middle or should they all be the same because it doesn't really click.

I would change from universal search to app launcher (under options from main menu)
I would add speed dial to all my frequent calls.
(I believe these two options will make your phone more efficient than anything else out there as the BB screen automatically provides you with the message that got it to buzz while in your holster.)
I also like ShortCutMe and NFC tags. If you care to learn or have someone help you learn the light code required to make these work together you can automate anything on your BB.
I would also download Vlingo, seems to still be free.
I would also say the following are must have apps:
Bloomberg for news. Nothing flashy but the analysis is great.
BB Traffic (free voice nav)
BB Portect
BB Music (subscription service that is 1/2 of Pandora or Slacker Premium) and great for checking out new songs without worrying if you think it is good enough to buy or not. Also, share with BBM buddies.
Endomondo. Just love this app for training. I ride and run with it all the time.
On the hardware side get a spare battery and an SD card. Also, if yours did not come with a holster make sure you get a case that allows for NFC to work and also with a magnet that turns the screen on and off when holstering.
Enjoy it.
My BlackBerry. Just love it, love it, love it. - 07-16-2012, 04:15 PM #20

Thanks for all of the posts. Ok I just upgraded to 342 and now I promise the screen is much dimmer. Auto dim is turned off and I have the device all the way up to 100. Does this issue ring a bell to anyone? The stock Verizon software seemed to be much brighter.
