telnav gps and OS 7.1
Is Telnav (at $10 a year) still the best and most reliable GPS for the blackberry? (from what I recall, it was the go-to gps a year or so ago)
...and does it function properly with 7.1?
I see people discussing/debating google maps vs. blackberry maps, but do those function as gps apps? ... or are they just maps that given some sort of basic list of directions? - 04-12-2012, 07:45 AM #2
Well, I am on sprint and Telnav is free, but iirc I think for Vz it is $10/month not $10/year?..
the difference is that telnav is a car navigation app.. with a much cleaner and friendlier UI whereas the others are map apps with directions that can be used for navigation.. At $10/month i would use something else, but for free, i wouldnt

Telenav is $10/year for Verizon. I have it on my 9850 with 7.1 and it works great.

Telenav is 10 bucks a month for t-mobile. Would get it if it was one flat fee

Wow!
I'm wondering why there is such disparity in price.
Spring: free
Verizon: $10/year
T-Mobile: $10 a month???
I watched a video on the features and it actually looks to be even more full featured than most dedicated GPS units. - 04-12-2012, 04:51 PM

I meant to ask,
Can you talk on the phone while using Telenav? - 04-12-2012, 05:43 PM #8
It depends on your carrier... if you have a GSM carrier (like T-Mobile, AT&T), your phone can handle data and voice at the same time. If you have a CDMA carrier (like Verizon or Sprint), then your phone cannot have an active data session while you are talking on the phone.
I use Telenav with my VZW 9930 on OS 7.1, and if i get a phone call while using the Nav, the maps will still display, at least up until what was already downloaded runs out. but the voice prompts stop immediately. so it has very limited functionality. When your call ends, the TeleNav app will say "you now have cellular coverage," and start working normally again.

That's interesting.
On the Android phone that I just broke... on Verizon... I was able to talk and have the GPS working at the same time.
The only problem was the voice navigation would keep interrupting the phone conversation! (just the opposite of telnav) - 04-12-2012, 07:17 PM #10

oh.. yes. I had 4g. That's right.
Still, looking forward to the 9930. I've got some work to do and don't need all the fiddly stuff. - 04-12-2012, 07:23 PM #12
As far as Telenav goes, I've noticed some bugs while running on 7.0 that didn't seem to occur on any of the 7.1 versions I've tried. First, it won't get a lock on satellites if I haven't enabled GPS on the phone before launching the app. Which is a pain because I have a car mount with Smart Accessory technology, so when I dock it, it automatically launches Telenav, turns off wifi and turns on bluetooth. Then another bug happens - it takes forever for the app to actually close on 7.0. It's the only time I see the hourglass on the phone. Probably a good 30 seconds before I can do anything on the phone. Then, after I close it, I have to enable gps (with quicklaunch) and open Telenav again.
I wanted to roll back to 7.0 for other reasons, so I deal with those bugs. On 7.1, telenav was bug-free as far as I could tell. - 04-12-2012, 09:14 PM #13
Never tried Telnav cause I don't need a GPS app often enough to pay $10 a month but I used Waze which quit developing fo BB awhile back and Life in Pocket. Waze is fair but has some snags. I recently learned Blackeberry Traffic added voice navigation. So far seems pretty solid. Its free so its worth a try.

BB traffic is free and great. It lacks the map but gives turn by turn voice directions.
