Default My 9930. The good, the bad and the miracle.

Okay, so here's the story. It all started with my (recently purchased) Verizon Wireless BlackBerry Bold 9650 running so slow on OS 6 that I couldn't take it any longer. I had a 9650 a few years ago (may she rest in pieces) and I could not remember ever being that pissed off with the speed of the phone. I decided that I would I would downgrade to OS 5.

I ended up wiping the 9650 with BBSAK and using Desktop Manager to install OS 5. What a difference in performance. I started thinking again. Maybe I would wipe the 9650 again and install OS 6? Maybe OS 6 would run smoother with the device being freshly wiped (did I just say "freshly wiped"?). Yes. It ran so much better than before.

All of this got me thinking about my $475 paperweight that was collecting dust in one of my desk drawers. My beautiful BlackBerry Bold 9930 had been bricked since September 12, 2012. Since I hadn't messed with the phone in a few months, why not give it another shot? I mean, it was my favorite phone that I ever had.

After the tragedy, I was looking through every forum on this website to try and find some way to bring my beloved berry back to life. No such luck. She would just lay there on my nightstand and blink at me with her bright, red light (don't judge me).

Early this morning I found a post in a forum (of course I can't find it now) with a resolution that supposedly worked. His 9900/30 had been running OS 7.1 before it bricked. No matter what he did, he was not able to get the device to 'connect to JVM'. Sounds exactly like my problem. He was able to get his device to wake up by installing OS 7.0. Well shoot... what do I have to lose?

I searched, for what seems like forever, for an official Verizon release of 7.0. I eventually found and downloaded 7.0 Bundle 1739 on some sketchy website.

Using Application Loader, I was able to get my phone to stop that endless reboot. I went through all of the steps and then I watched Application Loader do it's magic. I couldn't believe it. My beautiful BlackBerry had connected to the JVM. And then it booted ALL the way! It was a miracle!

I'll stop there. Needless to say, I was ecstatic.

Here's where the story turns bad. From the same article where I read about loading OS 7.0, I also read that his touch screen didn't work after everything was done. My touch screen didn't (doesn't) work either. I haven't been able to find much on this yet.

Also, I figured that since my phone was able to run (almost perfectly) fine with 7.0, why wouldn't I be able to update the software to the most current version? I plugged my phone back in and opened Desktop Manager. I did a back up and downloaded 7.1 Bundle 2123.

Everything seems to be going as it should.. until it was time to connect to the JVM. Nope. She wouldn't have it. What do I even say? Luckily, I was able to go back to 7.0 and everything (except the touch screen) seems to be working fine.

Well, if you read all of this, I appreciate it! I know I'm not the only one that has a love/hate relationship with their Bold. Feel free to comment on anything. I'm curious to know if anybody else is in the same situation as me right now. #BB4LYF

I never used the touch screen on the 9900 anyway. I'd be happy to have her back.

It's love/hate with my 9930 too. I got it on VZW, but then came back to AT&T. Got it unlocked, but on AT&T's network, the best speed I can get is EDGE. Sigh. After being spoiled using devices on 3G and 4G LTE, I just couldn't get past the lurch of EDGE anymore. I don't use it as my daily driver anymore, but I find myself pulling it out of the drawer and playing with the device on wifi. I'm tempted to give EDGE another chance. I miss the marshmallowy keyboard.
