    Default Memory leak?

After a reboot I'm at 170 but in a few days I'm down to 110 mb. I've disabled social feeds and podcasts. Only have facebook, browser and ubertwitter. Running stock OS7.

Only problem is after a few days I have to reboot since the phone starts to slow down.

Memory leak is unavoidable with a Java based UI... that's what the battery pull was invented for.

A new OS should help you out but will not cure a memory leak. .267 was absolutely horrible. You use the media player right? That is a big time killer on memory. Check this thread out and read up on it: I have a huge Memory leak. I need some help and advice to get rid of it..

I’m on .342 and I’ve only lost 1.7 MB since my last reboot 14 hours ago. If I use my media player I can increase that number by 50-60 MB easily in about 5 hours.

But yes, as Phill said it is unavoidable to an extent.

Phill, I thought exactly the same thing.
Just now I was hit hard by the thought while I talked to my GF, who uses my old 9700 with OS6 and instructed her to reset the device as the memory went down to very low level: I have never experienced any memory leaks while on OS 5.
So IMHO your statement is not 100% correct.

And just BTW: I've been running OS 7.1 long enough to forget how it was with OS 7.0 in 9900, but I am quite convinced I did not have a memory leak problem either. But maybe I'm just making it up...

Upgrade your OS... It solved it for me just about with OS 7.1.0.402...
7200>8800>9000>8520>9000>9800>9900. If something's broken, a battery pull can usually fix it...

you can run but you cant hide. I'm on 7.1.0.402 and down -45.1mb trust me, i've tried everything, including running nothing but a stock bb and still ended up losing memory.

Very odd, i have run every version of 7.1 that has been available, reboot once a week and have never lost more than 1mb inbetween reboots.

No apps installed other than MeterBerry and all social feeds and similar things are deleted.

It's been 20 hours since my last reboot and I'm down 13.1 MB. Not sure if it is the OS or app related.

So if I am still going to have memory leaks with 7.1 aren't I just better off with 7.0 since I'll have more available memory for apps and such?

Memory leaks are really not that big of a deal. Three hours ago I was at -13.1 MB and now after some usage and news reading, I’m sitting at -14 MB. Regardless, your memory will fluctuate depending on your usage. The device performance is better on newer OS’s, especially going from 7.0 to 7.1. Give it a try, you can easily downgrade.

Garbage collection should kick in after a certain percentage of memory left. (In theory)

Check this out, try see how low can you go on free memory...

Exactly, let it get real low and you may not even notice a difference. I’ve never had a negative outcome in performance when I’ve seen a huge drop.

i wonder if it has anything to do with the way you load the os (do you do a full wipe and no restore? or maybe that i use the gmail plugin?)

If you are getting slowdown with 100+ mb free then memory is not the issue at all...

Something else is bogging down your phone...

So I updated to 7.1 last night. Now I start at 140 and I'm down to 107 now..haha. I still need to delete some apps like Wikitude.

We'll see how well performance wise the new OS helps my phone. Too early to tell if batt life has improved although I would usually get a full days worth on one charge on 7.0.

I'm surprised your GF isn't your ex-GF if you gave her your 9700.

    Not to hijack....BUT
I have tried this. I can get to 75 MB and then I have to reboot as the hourglass will not disappear from the screen. On a good day I lose 45MB. On a bad day (several theme changes, a dozen BerryWeather changes, 10 or so BattEx changes) and I am down about 100 to 120MB.

    Today after 12 hours...down 78.4MB. Typical...

This has happened to me for EVERY OS, version and number I have ever run...EXCEPT OS5. So to the poster who said OS5 was exempt...I drink to you!

So OP understand where you are coming from. I have never, ever run a leak or OS that didn't leak like a slashed artery.

I've never been able to escape the memory leak issue either. Had OS 4.5, 6, & now 7.1. I've always had to reboot my bb every few days to reclaim memory. Think I'd figure something was wrong if I didn't.
