When your led flashes, can you see it shine through the left side where the sensor is? I didn't notice it one the 1st one I had. But this one does it.

    Edit for pic:

I've noticed that on my 9930, but not a big deal to me.. I'm not sure what that other opening is for.. but I know it is there for a purpose. When I am on a call I see the opening to the left next to the LED opening it blinks a dim red light constantly.

What does the "proximity sensor" do?

The sensor shuts the screen off when you're on phone so your ear doesn't start launching things.

Hmm. My ear launches stuff so I have an app that locks the screen during a call. Wonder if my proximity sensor is broken? Sometimes I can see my proximity sensor flash quickly.

And I don't remember my first one doing it. I wouldve noticed it right away like I did with this one. It makes the flash look really bad.

Yes it does, that thing is separate tho, It shouldn't get flash lights all around near that light dimming sensor
Does that LED blinking makes your LED gets bright?

It doesn't get brighter per say. But that sensor turns the whole color of the led, like I have dual leds. That shot just happen to be perfect timing and angle to show what it's doing as the right half of the sensor is sorta squared off..

I've already filed a replacement with my carrier. Hopefully the next one is flawless.

Mine doesn't do that either, I'd get a replacement. Seriously, RIM needs to learn flaws like this simply should not happen on 500 flagship devices. I am actually wondering what went wrong with 9900 quality control....

No, Your proximity sensor is not broken. It does one thing, measure the amount of light present and then assume what it needs to do based on whats currently running.

If you are on a call, and you cover it with your finger - it dims the screen.

If you are on the home screen, and you cover it with your screen - it either brightens your screen/turns on your keyboard or dims the screen.

Anyway, it is a very simple system and if it broke it wouldn't do any of those things.

It does not launch apps by its self.
