You don't have to jump through bs to update the os. Just follow the directions you've been given several times and use apploader. Its not hard at all. If you don't want to update the os then don't.

You do NOT have to wipe first with BBSAK. When you use Apploader it wipes the device anyway before it loads the new OS.

When I open the apploader, ALL that shows is a few apps that I have on my phone.. It mentions NOTHING about a 7.1 os!!

I really haven't a clue what your doing wrong. Have you continued through the prompts with Apploader until you start to load up? Does Apploader actually connect to your phone ok?
Do as you would be done by and 12 pence to the shilling (or 100 cents to the dollar).

The only prompt I have is which communication port to use, manually detect port (its a checkbox...), and then it displays which apps I have on my phone. If I check the box, the apploader will uninstall the app.

You do not have to wipe first.

This is my usual OS changing process that I follow and suggest for others:

    1. Uninstall any previous OS you may have installed.
    2. Install the OS to your PC. (The correct device OS)
    3. If you have a Windows PC, change your folders option to show hidden files/folders
    4. Then go to: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader and delete the vendor file.
    5. IF you happen to have Windows 64 bit, go here as well: C:\Users\*your user name*\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML and delete that vendor file as well.

*You need to delete the vendor file(s) whenever you are using an OS that is not from your carrier. A simple search of your c: drive should pull these 2 vendors up as well, but you must have enabled show hidden files/folders.

    6. Open up Desktop Manager and check to see if there is an updated OS and install.

    or

    7. Open up Loader in your PC: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader

    Edit:
Some or most these points have been covered. But follow the steps.

Never needed to delete other OS's myself.

Have .318 .342 .391 & .428 all installed and DM always shows up the highest numbered OS as available to install.

I have had a bit of a think and seem to recall that someone posted a while ago that running a "file cleaner" on their PC solved an issue like this one.

From memory I think that CCleaner was the recommended program.

    Just a thought.

Also, if you have ever installed a Hybrid OS, it usually messes up your registry... just a thought..

I once had to format my laptop because a guy names Max Rudolfo released hsi so called MaxHybrid OS and his installer screws up everything related to installing an OS!!

Go to control panel then uninstall programs. Find anything that's says BlackBerry Device Software. Uninstall, then install new OS.

You must use the Windows Delete Programs function to remove any old OS.

DO NOT JUST DELETE THE FILES MANUALLY.

Try doing this and then run CCleaner and see if the new OS shows up (check that the dreaded Vendor files have not re appeared after any restarts you may have done, it is not unknown !!!

yea i'm still having issues getting 7.1 on my phone, I've followed every possible advice to the tee. I had rogers send me instructions as well and it didn't help. I call Rim and I couldn't get a tech on the phone. I love this phone but why is updating software troublesome for me. Never had issues with my other blackberries before. FYI this phone was bought directly from rim too if that even matters.

    That doesn't matter

Format your PC something seems to be seriously wrong with it or its registry then try again. Upgrading a RIM OS is the simplest thing ever
