I have made an error in setting up my B.B. ID - can someone tell me how to edit/correct the info given, on a 9900 Bold ?

The mistake is in my "user name" - where is asked for an email address - I've made a spelling mistake in that address.
I had put "btinternmet.com" instead of "btinternet.com" -- oops !

And does the "user name" have to be an email address ?

I would create one with the proper name to get started, and yes to is tied to your email address as far as I know. If the other email address is wrong, it would be tied to your email address as it is invalid. Your BBID also keeps track of all of your purchases so that if you were to change phones, all of your apps are there for you to install on your new phone.

Create a new ID and yes, the username is your email address. Use an address that you will have access to for a long time. Save you in the long run.
