Do you "close" apps or just back out?
Do you guy generally go into the menu and hit close or exit when finishing with an app or just hit the back button?
I recently abandoned my youmail app after it repeatedly failed after the 7.1 update and switched to hullomail. I actually like it better except if I don't go into menu and hit exit when finishing with the app, I will get the "uncaught exception" warning and then the app will not re-open unless a restart is done.
I just force myself to go hit close every time now and problem solved, I was just wondering is this necessary for all apps? What is the diff? Do they all just continue to run unless you manually close them?
Thanks for the feedback on a dumb question - 09-07-2012, 01:42 AM #3
I agree. I hit close/exit for pretty much every app unless I know I'll be coming back to it shortly.
I probably don't need to do this anymore since my 9900 has plenty of memory to run a few apps at once with out slowing it down unlike my older berries where I picked up this habit...
Partly its my OCD that it bugs me when I press/hold the BB button to switch apps and I see more that 6 or 7 app running - I have to close them!

I agree with the above post. I usually close all the apps I know I won't use for a while and leave the ones I'll be back on shortly. I think it's a good habit to save battery as well.

I always close them. anything running in the back ground will use resources which translates into battery consumption. i need to have the battery last 15-18 hours so every little bit helps
I hope this helps. - 09-07-2012, 09:14 AM #9
Some apps close by backing out and others you need to hit menu then close/exit. I know how each of my apps close accordingly, so I close and leave open what is necessary.

Menu, close all of them. Always have done just to be sure. I hate stuff in the application switcher, eating CPU cycles and battery.

menu > close
For some reason, pressing back doesn't feel like its actually closing it to me. - 09-07-2012, 01:16 PM #13
depends on the app. if I want it to stay open I just hit the end button. but if I want it closed I go through the menu and close it.

To me, this is one of RIM's UI stupidities. I imagine they got it wrong the first time around and kept it that way forever for backwards compatibility sake.
If you keep hitting back until you arrive at the home screen, that is equivalent to closing the app. If you hit the end key to arrive at the home screen, then the app is still running in the background.
The reasons this seems wrong to me are:
- hitting the "end" key seems to imply ending an app so it should mean close. Hitting back or escape should leave it running.
- if you get in the habit of hitting end to keep things running, sooner or later you will be talking to someone on the phone, then want to go look something up while you are still on the line and then hit "end", hanging up on your caller. ARGH!
It's natural to keep hitting back until you get to the home screen, so I guess in the old days when phone hardware was less capable, RIM decided that they should kill off your app in that case, and make you hit end instead to keep it running. It will always seem backwards to me though.
No to mention, it seems redundant to have extra "switch application" and "close" entries in every menu that duplicate what you can do with dedicated keys.
And finally, some apps can't be closed but STILL have close menu items. This is really confusing for new users. - 09-07-2012, 09:25 PM #16
I'm always carefull to close (exit) from any app I'm not using. Always. ~ecm

Some close using the return key, others require menu/close. No apps close using the end call button. It's easy enough to figure out which is which. Menu/close always closes the app. If you are unsure if the return key is closing the app or not just press and hold the menu key which brings up the app switcher, and shows you running apps!

I do normally close using the menu button and when i use the shortcut in a hurry ARM shuts it down for me.

I usually go Menu>Close unless its an app that can close by just using the "back" button.

Fair enough. Apps are able to override the default behaviour and stay open in the background even if you quit with the "back" button, in the same way that on Windows, some apps can close to the tray and stay running when you hit the X of their window.
Take a look at this:
Close an app so that it is not running in the background - BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 Smartphones - User Guide - BlackBerry Bold Series - 7.0
This says that if you keep hitting back until you get to the home screen, it will close an app so it isn't running in the background.
And then this:
Keep an application running in the background and switch to another application - BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 Smartphones - User Guide - BlackBerry Bold Series - 7.0
Says that if you quit using the end key you will return to the home screen without closing the app.
