You remove all of the stuff that you don't intend to use such as applications, fonts, etc. The OS takes up less memory, which may or may not be a big deal, but you don't have apps running in the background that you never use. What got me on to shrinking in the first place was removing BBM, which I don't / can't use. If you want to learn about it, install a tool such as bbhtool and have at it.

No one experiencing memory drain? Ever since 7.1 I seem to be experiencing varying degrees of memory dropping to the point the phone is crawling and requires a reboot. I haven't yet determined the cause, but I suspect it's related to some app I'm running, as I haven't heard much in the way of confirmation for the forums. (so far, I'm suspicious of Pandora, when I leave it running in the background)
Otherwise, the battery life is much improved over earlier versions, so I'll leave Quicklaunch to perform a scheduled reboot early in the morning before I leave for the office. - 04-24-2012, 12:54 PM #34
9900/7.1.0.402 is a gem.
Best so far, I would say.
After 205, this version really stays.
Phone runs amazingly cooler than the 318. It used to heat up severely while using 3G before.
And the response times are equally better.
Overall, it is a gold standard. - 04-24-2012, 01:07 PM #35Bold 9900 on Vodafone UK running BL Ultimate Hybrid RC15 on Do Co Mo .923 Base and .sfi

With a lot of anticipation, I installed the .402 BUT Radio quality didnt cut it for me esp. in India's networks.
I wanted the larger sfi file sized version but seems will now have to wait until .402 goes official & then some Asian Carrier releases it officially.
Am now on the Asia ver of the .342 which is doing fairly well with no Radio problems experienced. battery life is another story - all depends how the phn is managed by the user.
Sadly interchanging sfi file off the .342 Asia to the .402 didn't work & resulted in ERROR on loading. Wish there was a way to get this sorted ... - 04-24-2012, 04:15 PM #38
I think so. I'd have to be this or .267 on my 9900. Although this version looses a tiny bit of battery life but rectifies the horribly slow text input in the browser and memory leak... I like it.

Could someone running a 9930 on Verizon coming from 7.1.0.163 possibly comment on the change?
Or is it a no-brainer and I should just pull the trigger?
I don't really have any complaints about this OS - but, if the grass on the other side is greener - then why not?

I'd hardly refer to it as a "Gold standard". It does nothing much differently or any better than recent previous 7.1 releases. Voice command over Bluetooth is still broken and the BB has a tough time understanding names through voice command, unlike much earlier 7.1 and 7.0 releases...and truly pathetic compared to 6.0 on the 9780. Seems to get worse on every release. Battery life is no different, but I never expect it to be. Why would anyone call this a "Gold standard"?

I don't know about "gold standard" either (that would imply that RIM should stop making improvements, which I don't think many would agree with), but I'm finding the battery life to be an improvement over 7.1.0.342. My phone idling at 1% per hour with bluetooth enabled and it's only bit higher with wifi enabled, which is definitely better than it was before. What kind of bluetooth headset are you using? I have a blueant Q1 and it's worked fine with every OS version I've tried.

i find it to be a lot better than any other release thus far... runs smoother and faster and the battery has lasted me all day with the stock battery... i just disabled the gps bluetooth and uninstalled blackberry protect which if people didnt know would kill your battery

Got the mic issue on ATT here. Think swapping the radio file would fix that issue? Maybe an unlock? Aside from the mic thing this OS is super nice.
