Can't restore emails... pulling my hair out.
- I'm with Sprint and just upgraded to a 9930 (from a 9650).
I backed up the 9650 with Blackberry Desktop (most recent version). I have two fairly large email accounts on my 9650 and kept the mail for both to May 1, 2011. Between both accounts, there were about 3,000 emails. I need these for reference while on the go... so I can't delete them (well, I could delete some but too lazy to go through them all and delete unimportant ones). I also have about 50,000 text messages (yes, I know... sounds crazy... but many of these I need for work). I can't see how much memory a text message would take anyway so I didn't think it was a big deal. With the exception of Beyond 411, I have no 3rd party programs on the phone.
After about 40 minutes, the back up was complete and the Blackberry Desktop, stated the back up was successful with no issues.
I then go forward with a "restore" with my new 9930. After about an hour and 80% complete on the green progress bar, an error pops up "There was an error restoring - there could have been a problem with the device or connection during the restore. Verify that the device is turned on and connected". The phone did seem to work fine until I noticed I was missing all email after May 25 (so basically about 80% of my emails) and this was consistent with both accounts.
I tried to restore again and the same thing happened except the restore bar was maybe about 70% complete when the error popped up. Missing email after May 25 again on both accounts.
I tried with a different cable a third time... but still the same problem. Still missing the same emails. Also, the accounts don't set up properly so I don't receive email on either account on my BB (I tried sending email to myself).
I don't know what to do and I really need those emails. Any help is much appreciated!08-24-11 09:25 PMLike 0 - What I suggest you doing is doing a selective restore through DM... Choose the restore option and tell it to do a selective restore where you're given a list of items from the backup file that you can restore back onto the device. Probably best to restore everything in the list minus the messages and SMS/MMS messages. If that is successful, I would recommend doing a battery pull on the device to give it a good reset on the device. After it comes back up, go ahead with a restore of just the messages. If that's done, repeat with the battery pull followed by the restoration of the SMS/MMS messages and finally do a final battery pull. The selective restore will give you an idea where it's crapping out on if it does crap out with this method. Given the size of your restore, hopefully it's just an overload that's remedied by restoring it piece by piece.
If it craps out on e-mails then you'll have to sift through and cut it down to remove junk... same goes for the MMS messages.
If you've transferred your service over to the new BB, then you won't be receiving any emails to your old. Your new BB will need to go through the process of re-activation, which can be done by going into sprint.blackberry.com and signing in. You might be able to do this on the device itself with the Setup Wizard as well.08-24-11 10:18 PMLike 0 - if you have the latest DM , I am assuming you did a full back up. it was successful so check in windows explorer if your .ipd file is there and the size of it. I think I would try to ascertain if you have the emails. once we know that's a good start.
do you have a password on your BB, because it took a while to restore, if you you have a password that kicks in after a while, then it wont be able to restore coz the connection is lost.
for the email accts to work you need to register?08-24-11 11:33 PMLike 0 - Thanks for the responses!
Well, the good news is that I received a "RESTORE COMPLETE - The items from the backup file were successfully restored. It is now safe to disconnect your device." pop up window... However, the progress bar was only about 85% and there were 6,500 or so messages that were supposed to be transfered but only 1,800 or so where transfered once the "RESTORE COMPLETE" pop up appeared. So for whatever reason, the email doesn't want to restore. I'll try a selective one after this to see if I can move more of the messages.08-24-11 11:59 PMLike 0 - Can I suggest installing the Logicmail app, an imap client for blackberry, it will save all the older emails to the SD card and keep blackberry email for instant email notifications. That's how I use mine.
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com08-25-11 01:35 AMLike 0 - Thanks, guys... I got it working. Apparently the phone/software can't handle so many SMS and email messages on a single back up/restore (fire the engineers at RIM). But I managed to break it up into pieces through the selective back up and restore feature. After 5 hours I finally have my emails and SMS messages!the brother likes this.08-25-11 02:36 AMLike 1

- I backed up my MMS/SMS, emails and everything else up separately - separate back up and separate restore for each item... it took a long time but it worked. The entire file was just over 100MB in total. I guess that's too much for the software/phone to handle.08-26-11 04:10 PMLike 0
- oh, ok. i'm in similar boat on my Torch 9800 i have 13,000+ emails and I want to restore just emails from the ipd. it says complete after a minute but i don't get the emails? I guess I need to back up selectively too.
will try that now.....08-26-11 04:13 PMLike 0
