I am trying to make use of the RFID or NFC functionality of the phone.

I'm wondering if the phone even picks up signals while asleep, and if so if there is a command that wakes the phone so that you don't have to wake it manually each time you hold it against a tag.

Any help or links to similar discussions would be greatly appreciated!

    No, it is not possible.

To be able to read a NFC tag, the NFC chip in the BB should be in Reader/Writer mode.
Reader/Writer mode is off when the Blackberry is off (it is even off when the backlight is off, or when the BB is password locked).

Card Emulation mode of NFC could theoretically be On when the BB is off because it is powered by the field (created by a point of sales reader). I am not sure if this is supported by BB. I guess we will find out about it when we get able to pay with the BBs.
