My ATT Bold 9900 is completely bricked today after just 2 days. Completely shocked. Had it on medium battery in the middle of the night, when I woke up to get some water around 6am I noticed it died. Went to the other room, put it on the charger and went to bed not thinking twice. When I got up, I noticed it was still completely dead and if I pressed any buttons I would get the red light. Went to my computer trying to plug it in that way and it's doing the same thing. I get the blackberry cannot communicate with the device error every 10 seconds.
Ok... I have been monitoring AT&T 9900 threads and responses on theses forums since its release; to my knowledge this is the first time that an actual AT&T 9900 user has experienced the bricking issue. Could be an isolated incident, but still validates my reasoning for waiting before buying.

Yeah really, you would think that AT&T would have found the issue from their Testing since they Do like to Satisfy their customers in giving them flawless devices.

RIM better wake up and Do something about this! If this can't be fixed immediately, I can only imagine how BBX phones will be.

    Just an update...

My AT&T BB 9900 has not bricked and has worked fine thus far. I did however find one very annoying problem with the device. I also have the PlayBook and I usually take it with me wherever I go. I went to New Orleans for the weekend and I decided not to carry both wall chargers, so I took the PlayBook charger, thinking it would charge both devces. Bad assumption! The Playbook charger will not charge the BB9900, so my phone died on my 1st day. The PlayBook charger will charge a BB9700 with no problem. And the BB9900 battery will fit in the BB9700, but is not recognized by the device.

So the battery draining completely doesn't appear to be a cause of bricking, because I just painfully went through that. Longest I've been without my phone and it wasn't easy!

Not bricked it .. "yet"... but a little observation I did...

Some days after charging to 100% I realize it won't drop - it stays on 100% all the time... for hours... until I do a reboot - and then the battery meeter starts working again..

SO there is definitely something with the battery/charge circuitry - hopefully it will be fixed in updates...

(am on .503 now - same issues)

Mine just bricked today @ work! Got a JVM 529 error right after a soft reboot with Alt/Caps/Del combo that ended up into a white screen software reload error... 102. Had to re-activate my trusty old Tour... too tired to restore a nuked Berry now, so will attempt tomorrow. Miss the phone bigtime already! I may even just ask for a replacement, I mean this is the 3rd JVM error, but the first two didn't brick the phone, I just pulled the battery and booted up fine by chance.

    I'll report back tomorrow.

Bold 9900, used it flawlessly for 2 months. Today i wanted to update to new leaked .540 version, did all the usual steps, had 50% battery when started the update. All went fine then suddenly phone turned itself off and red light started to slowly blink. I went nuts, since i have no warranty for my phone... Tried all the chargers i had around, tried pulling the battery a few times, left the phone without battery, sim and card for a while, all in vain. Slow blinking red light while screen turned off... I kept trying with loader.exe /nojvm command, loader connected but i got random freezes at different loading stages of the os ( when loading apps on pc) . But i kept trying and trying an trying, disconnected the phone from pc, pulled the batt, recconected and finally i succeeded.

So, just try and you might get it working again like i did! I am so damn happy now!

Are the updates for bkackberrys really necessary? Cus when i think of a windows pc for instance, it always says that there are updates fir it even tho the pc or laptop is working fine, sometimes the updates do more bad thab good, what are your thoughts on this?

Depends on the user. For some, updates fix things and/or improve performance and battery life. For others, some things can be fixed while others broken. Sometimes there's improvements at the cost of battery life. Different users have reported totally opposite results with the same updates on identical devices.

Updates are generally a good thing; and if there's a problem then one can always reinstall the previous version. "Necessary" can be applied loosely, it's a choice to update - not a requirement. Blackberry owners that don't frequent CB or similar sites can own a device and never know about updates unless their carrier pushes one out.

My Bold 9930 wont turn on. It keeps flashing the red LED. I've tried a battery pull. I've tried all the suggestions except for rebooting the OS. From what I've read it sounds as if it's a hardware issue.

I WILL be taking it back to Verizon and demanding an immediate replacement from new stock! I DO NOT want a refurbished phone since I bought a new phone at full retail price at release time back in August!!

Hey, look at the bright side, this is GREAT job security for the Sprint, AT&T and Verizon techs. The bricked phone phenomena is keeping them busier than ever.

Good luck with that... Sprint only gave me refurbs to replace my bricked phones (three so far)... even if my first phone was only 2 months old.

hello no idea which thread to post this in (there are to many) but my phone went into a reboot cycle when i tried to charge it/reset, my phone decided that it would not charge off any of my chargers (the one i have been using for the past few months since i got the phone and the playbook charger) and as i thought it was just a blackberry quirk i reset the device with a battery pull and hey presto now in a reboot cycle (bricked??)

So is this a good place to ask for help?

Following the guide in the blog to replace the COD that is giving the problem..... I wasn't sure where to start, I have MANY MANY lines that read like this

    Code:
    guid:0x97C9F5F641D25E5F time: Wed Nov 16 17:03:15 2011 severity:0 type:2 app:System data:CMM: code link check failed for net_rim_bb_twitter_lib-5(542)
However only one COD gave verifyhash errors as shown below.

    Code:

I was able to perform a backup (for my data) before I did anything else.

I deleted that COD, however I then got a message to the effect of "No input method found for Locale en-GB", and then inescapable "Uncaught exception: java.lang.NullPointerException" as soon as I click OK it reappears.

I thought I would replace the COD with one I have on my PC... hang on a minute, I don't have an OS for this phone as I haven't updated yet. So I downloaded the latest official .503 release, injected the COD.

Now I just get the inescapable "Uncaught exception: java.lang.NullPointerException" message, and still no normal home screen, it lists the Apps I have installed as text with "BlackBerry Platform 5.0.0.496" at the top.

Strangely once I had semi-recovered the phone it seems to be sort of working, I have had several message alert sounds played, but I can't actually use it to see what they are.

As it happens I had deferred a reboot after an update in AppWorld (maybe appworld itself) and later felt the need to reboot as the phone had become sluggish.

I'm installing .503 to get my phone working again, I hope. At least it is still within 30 days if I need to get it replaced.

If anyone has any use for them the Error Logs are available with the Error102, and with the Bixarre (Lack of) Homescreen. I also have a BBSAK phone dump, but am less happy to share that in it's entirity, specfic elements may be made available on request. Unfortunately BBSAK has been unable to get a screenshot of the strange homescreen or I would have attached one. If anyone is able to tell me how to get a BB screenshot from the PC I will, until then the picture I took with my 9700 will have to do.

    ##UPDATE##
Having installed .503, the DM process tells me the backup did not restore.
All apps seem to have been reinstalled, but no data. I went to manually restore the backup data to find that the .ipd backup file is only 419kb, compared to 2,506kb for my 2 week old backup. So I look inside to find that the addressbook hadn't backed up.

The manual backup I made at 6pm (now 10pm) also doesnt have address book entries, so I am restoring to a backup from 3rd nov at least BBProtect should have a more recent copy of my address book. Fingers crossed for no more bricking.
