i purchased a dual USB 5v micro car charger the really small GRIFFIN one that has two USB ports, it works perfect with all my devices ipod, iphone, 8900, 9700 , 9780 but for some reason even with the 5V USB cable from the 9900 box it will not charge ?
Does anyone know the reason for this ?
i really want to keep this charger due to its size is there anything else comparable and comptanible with 9900
I have the same problem. I have two Griffin car chargers and neither of them work with my 9900. It's strange because I'm assuming the power output is the same..
which one did you purchase? those griffin ones were perfect size
and even on google it says they are 9900 compatable :S
no one at futureshop bestbuy really knows why either
I do experience this issue on the 9900. On the 9700 or 9800, it works flawlessly but on the 9900, it doesn't work most of the time!! Why? Can someone explain?

Griffin one is nice
it works fine with a lower amperage charger. . a 1 amp will do.
If you're wondering why these chargers don't work its because of how RIM has set up their charging system over USB.
They took a page from Apple's book and the normally unused datalines for chargers in the USB cable carry a very particular voltage to tell the phone that this is a RIM charger and what type of amperage it offers. I'm not sure what voltages RIM uses but apples uses 2V/2V to signify a 500mAH charger (usb standard) and 2V/2.8V I believe to say its over an amp. These aren't the values of the RIM chargers though as they don't work from my tests.
Found most this out working on a DIY charger project for my 9900.
So ya, most chargers ignore or short the datalines however newer bb phones won't charge until they get the correct voltage signal from them. Which makes a lot of the universal chargers useless for this phone.
