after installing a new OS do you have to do battery pulls?
or is this just a myth?

As I said to you recently Nasir. Yes !
Read the OS update / leaks - threads. Its like downloading one big app.

I have never pulled my battery after an up/downgrade. It's all about preference, if pulling the battery makes you feel better or helps you think that it will make your browser snappy, then by all means, go ahead. It will not hurt anything.

This is my opinion exactly. I have never pulled the battery on an upgrade. I went several months without pulling the battery once, because I didn't think there was any need to do so and also because I have an Otterbox Commuter on my phone, which makes pulling the battery a PITA.
The only reason I pulled the battery recently was because the compass would not calibrate. After pulling the battery, the compass did calibrate, so there was a noticable benefit.
I get the impression it's an urban legend that the OS needs numerous battery pulls to "settle in" after an upgrade. I haven't noticed the slightest change in performance or battery consumption during the initial days after an OS upgrade.BlackBerry 9900 BOLD (7.1.0.861) (DIGICEL GROUP) - 05-20-2012, 11:57 AM #8

Anyway bk on topic. I have read here somewhere 3 blackberrys ago to do batt pulls after an OS update. If it works or if it doesn't, if its the sneeky placebo effect at work again or not. I have done them as I also know that new OS's have to settle in regarding battery performance etc.
Is that fair ? - 05-20-2012, 12:14 PM #11
I never pulled my battery out once in the 6-7 months I had it.

I pull my battery just to clear out the cobwebs & regain memory. I haven't had a single problem with my 9930 so I'm just gonna keep on doing what I'm doing.

How do you "know" that the OS has to "settle in"? Every time I've upgraded my 9900 (5 times since I got it), I haven't noticed any "settling in" and I haven't had to do a single battery pull, except the one time I noted previously regarding the compass. I think people believe the OS has to "settle in" so that's what they see and some people believe they have to help the OS "settle in" by pulling the battery several times so that's what they do. Like Oniberry said, if pulling the battery makes you feel like you're doing something useful, by all means, pull the battery. If you want to make it really special, pour a glass of scotch and light up a cigar.

I read the OS update threads. The running joke that keeps showing itself (is usually after a few posts) "how is the battery life" people retort by saying how do we know its too early to tell. "Give the OS to settle"
Are the only people who don't read these now posting here for goodness sake.

alt+shift+del will reset your phone, so the answer is no, you do not have to physically pull the battery.
After you install an OS it the phone will restart on its own and ask permission for reboots when you install some apps.
Battery pulls are a myth and only necessary when the phone locks up and becomes unresponsive.

I've never read anything official that a battery pull is necessary after a OS update, but I always do.....probably more out of habit then anything.

I've never actually tried a double soft reset, but I read about it here... http://crackberry.com/index.php?q=bl...ow&cb_mobile=0

I think that this is basically BS. <Alt><RShift><Del> (soft reboot) reboots the phone in exactly the same manner as a battery pull does except for the fact that whilst a soft reboot resets the system software and most of the hardware, a battery pull will cause (force) all the hardware to be reset to zero as well.
This is a small point, it's true but there may be registeres in the USB or other parts of the phone that the software does not reset whilst the OS is on its way back up after a soft reboot.
I have never proved this but I know that this happened with PC hardware <Ctrl><Alt><Del> vs a power off reboot back in the old days so maybe, just maybe it holds true for a BlackBerry.
Does this matter? I doubt it. I cannot remember the last time I did a battery pull. I do soft reboots only rarely. My phone gets rebooted enough by "The phone needs to be rebooted after <insertappnamehere> has finished installing/uninstalling." - 05-20-2012, 04:21 PM #24
A soft reset is not the same as a battery pull. I have had issues where a battery pull fixed an issue and a soft reset did not fix the same issue.
