I'm attempting a downgrade to the OS that shipped with the phone. Crossing my fingers.

Newfangled, Did you ever receive a reply to your BlackBerry support ticket?

Just out of interest, how are you doing your OS installs, via BlackBerry desktop app or using another toolkit BBH or the BlackBerry Swiss army utility. Very frustrating for you, there must be some way of getting BBM/ID working on your new 9930 ....

No reply to the ticket yet, but I got another reply from BlackBerry Help on Twitter.

I'm using BlackBerry Desktop for the OS upgrades/downgrades.

    Still Bold (9930)

I got a call from BlackBerry Support this morning.

After about an hour trying various things, the rep informed me that everything looks as it should on their end and that the problem is with the version of BBOS 7.1 on my phone not being compatible with the latest version of BBM in BlackBerry World.

The version of the OS on my phone is the latest official version supported by Verizon, so I have no other options at this point.

I guess I'm going to have to accept the fact that this phone is 5 years old and support for it is essentially dead.

Sounds like typical BlackBerry and/or carrier double talk.

When I first booted up my 9930, last week, and upgraded to 7.1.0.1066, the phone wanted me to update my BB ID, which failed. I had not even tried to open BBM or Blackberry world, or anything. I'm not sure these people really understand the issue.

I'm sure they don't, but I'm not sure it's worth my time to keep pushing the issue, at this point.

Do you have to have the latest version of BBM on your 9930 to be able to function on Verizon?
Can the 9930 run the later 7.1.0.1098 or are you stuck with what Verizon offer?

I probably don't fully understand the limitations of the 9930 compared with the 9900

9900 is GSM. 9930 is CDMA.
    1098 is GSM only.

I have NO idea why; I did not try anything new; I just clicked on the BBM icon and it said I have to update BB ID. So I figured why not, I'll try it one more time, just for kicks. Low and behold, the BB ID update downloaded and installed. My 9930 rebooted, and voila, BBM now works!

    Go figure.

I'd try an old version of BBM. Perhaps a version newer than the one on theiexplorers.com will work -- an 8.x version that's just a little older than the latest.

The same thing just happened for me! I am so glad it worked!

I have a feeling someone at BlackBerry just rebooted a server, haha.

I was about ready to go to my Verizon store and get a Classic.

I'm so glad I talked myself out of it.
