How Scratch Resistant is the screen on the 9790?
Anyone rocking their 9790 without a screen protector care to weigh in?
I am all about the screen protector but after having to take my first 9790 back and being unable to salvage the screen protector
I haven't been able to find a single screen protector for this model anywhere near me. I've got a bunch coming in from eBay but I'm worried about the intervening time before it arrives.
I'm not rough with my devices but I am really anal about scratches. Even the tiniest one will make me want to get rid of the phone. So I'm trying to get a sense of how resistant the screen is?

No, get a screen protector and you are not doomed. The 9790 screen is not scratch resistant.

I got some from ebay and the guy ended up giving me a refund because the whole bulk was 'faulty', it didn't curve round properly nor did it fit the screen, so I just did a hand cut job and have left it on till now (still have another 3 more left) let us now what your's are like, a picture would be handy aswell thanks

9790 screen is not scratch resistant. It might be a polycarbonate and shock-resitant.
At the time I purchased the 9790, there was no pre-cut screen protector available, and I am not sure if it is now.
But it's no sweat. I purchased a non-glare large screen protector for one of Android phones and cut it to size. I actually used a small 3M stickies as a template as it was the exact size for the 9790 screen.
Worked for me. - 04-29-2012, 07:40 PM #5
I bought mine from monoprice they don't have one specifically for the 9790 but one of the ones for the older bold does fit. the only issue i have is that the edge of the screen on this phone is rounded and so the edge of the screen protector does not sit super flush.

I avoided covering the rounded edge. Non-glare one is hard coated and only good for the flat surface. I have no problem. Softer protector would fit but I do not like those soft vinyl feeling. I always use non-glare one.
I thought I saw somewhere the 9790 specific one that covers all the way up to the top, not just the display part, but I don't need it. - 04-29-2012, 08:20 PM #7
Yea finding a protector is difficult. Many of the smaller kiosks (in Toronto) have ones that fit the screen but it leaves the upper end unprotected cause of the curved design. I ordered some from e-bay which at least according to the photo will cover the entire area. I got my phone only last week so I left the protector (if you can call it that) that came with it from factory.....man it looks so geeky....kinda avoiding taking it out in public!!!!...but I know what the OP feels.....even before I got the actual phone I ordered a plastic cover for it...bit touchy about scratching on the phones!!

I've had the 9790 for a short time and I'm not too worried about this screen. The Otterbox covers the top curve completely and stops just below the speaker. Also, the case makes the entire front of the phone recessed by about 1/16" of an inch.
I know the purpose of a screen protector, some need it, some don't. Personally I have yet to see one that doesn't compromise the quality of the screen. Also make sure that nothing else is in the same pocket

Thanks for all the responses everyone. I'll keep you all posted.
My usual rep gave me an otterbox protector for the screen when I got my first 9790 but when I had to get a new one I couldn't salvage it. It just wouldn't stick to the new phone after I took it off the old phone. And my rep isn't with my provider anymore so I couldn't get another one.
I did use my 8530 without a screen protector for the first 6 months I had it and it was fine. But it wasn't a touch screen. - 04-29-2012, 10:12 PM #10
