Hi Jo, and welcome to CrackBerry!

Was there any physical trauma or water exposure?

Tried physically removing the battery, then replacing it?

Have you downloaded the BlackBerry Desktop Software? (Referred to here commonly as "DM" for its former name, Desktop Manager)
If not, please do so via BlackBerry.com. If so, connect the 9790 to your PC and launch DM. Does it recognize the device?

If it does connect to DM, recommend you complete a Backup of the device ASAP as a precaution. It should just take a few minutes.

    1 thing to check...

    Detach from PC. Remove battery.
    Open DM.
Attach BB to PC. (battery still removed)
Replace battery. See if DM "catches" the BB at some point, even briefly.

Have you ever downloaded any BB firmware (an OS) to your PC?

Wondering if you have a program called Loader installed. Please navigate here on your PC:
    • 64-bit: Computer/C:/Program Files (x86)/Common Files/Research In Motion/AppLoader
    • 32-bit: Computer/C:/Program Files/Common Files/Research In Motion/AppLoader

In that AppLoader folder, is there a file called Loader?

First try downloading the software for your carrier once downloaded you have to install on your computer... BlackBerry - Desktop & Device Software Download Sites for BlackBerry users - US

    Once installed:
Follow these steps on how to load the software on your phone: How to Install or Upgrade to a New RIM BlackBerry Operating System (OS) with AppLoader | CrackBerry.com

If the apploaded doesn't recognize your phone there's more going on, you might want to try this: http://crackberry.com/blackberry-101...ked-blackberry

All this info can be found on this great site.

A connection to the device could not be established. Please ensure that the device is properly connected to the cradle or USB cable, and that the cradle or USB cable is connected securely to your computer. Also ensure that the device has completed any startup operations. Then run the Application Loader Wizard again.

My 9790 did almost the same, it didn't want to charge (after one year of normal use).
In the end, I claimed my warranty and get a brand new 9790.

Sorry to hear that, Jo. Sorry couldn't help more as well.

Just curious, why is repair not covered under warranty?

Many carriers would send it away first to allow an expert to determine if the damage is under warranty, or just wear & tear, misuse, etc.

Still don't know where you're located, and which carrier you use.
