    Default Full lock button alternative?

    I have a bold 9780. The lock button (on the top left of the phone) has become mashed in, and it is very difficult to press it to lock/unlock the phone. I've sent it back to the manufacturer for repairs but it came back no different.

    Is there any app, or workaround that would let me use a different button (say, the mute button) to lock and unlock the phone? I don't mean Password Lock, because that doesn't unlock the phone.

    Thanks in advance, I appreciate it!

    I have an app called MediaKeyBooster by Fonware that allows you to re-program up to 4 presses of the lock, pause and volume keys. I see 'KeyPad Lock' as one of the options it allows you to set.

    My lock button too at the top doesn't work. I hold down the button 'a' to lock and to unlock I hold down the end call and when it says turning off I quickly press the back button

    These just sound like bad button membranes. Easy and cheap to replace if you'd like full phone functionality back. It requires a few tools to disassemble the phone, but there are tons of website that sell the tools needed for disassembly.

    My lock button didn't "click" and it was the button membrane. Replaced it and now it works like all the other buttons.

    Here are the tools and parts required;

    Cell Phone Repair Soft Tool Set

    Cell Phone Repair Tool Set

    2 New Blackberry Curve 8520 8530 9300 and Blackberry Bold 9700 Side Button Membrane

    I believe the Torx bit required to open the housing is a T3, so if you already have that kicking around you don't need the tool set. The soft tool set if just nice to have so you don't damage/scratch the housing.

    i agree with this. the fix is way easy and is much better than trying to find another way around it. the 9700/9780 are the easiest to take apart and it fix will only take a few minutes. however, the buttons link he posted are NOT the right ones you need. the lock keys (on top) will only come with the full midplate, as they are tacked on. you will need to buy a whole new one to get the top lock buttons youre looking for. they are attached to the midplate and not sold separately. buy the midplate and swap the PCB and everything else over. you need the part below, where you get it is up to you. ive used cnn.cn and dealsishop.com. the 9700/9780 is the BB im most familiar with, as you can see by my sig. and ive done this replacement before a few times. any questions let me know. email the seller to verify before purchasing.

    You don't need the middle chassis/flex. At least I haven't experienced that. I have replaced several membranes for the top buttons and still used the same middle chassis/flex. The 9700 I currently use needed a new lock button and I replaced it without buying a new flex.

    There is a rubber on top of the membrane, but the buttons were not tacked into place. However, if you can get a middle flex for cheap, that's an even easier solution and you'll have some spare parts if anything else decides to break such as the headphone jack, microSD reader, etc.

    yea i forgot, they arent tacked. they attach around a small peg with some adhesive i think. either way, ive never seen them sold separately. and the ones you posted are not the correct part. since they arent sold by themselves, i believe they come with a new chassis. thats why i told him to get it.

    As another poster stated, using "a" to lock the phone would work; and the "power off" but quickly exiting that function to unlock the phone is a genius move!

    Even though they're listed as side buttons, they're actually exactly the same. I bought them when my lock button was defective and they're the same size as the side buttons.
