Better than Torch... probably
At first I was falling in love with Torch... but after a few try-outs I found the slider form factor is not as efficient as a QWERTY phone because for QWERTY phone you can just grab and type... without sliding out the keyboard.
I found that the trackpad is more useful than the touchscreen, more accurate and more easily maneuverable.
With all the being said, Torch is a great device.
Just wondering when 9780 will be out so I can compare the two.
Will 9780 even be released this year? Because my contract expires in Nov. - 08-13-2010, 11:15 PM #2
I'm pretty sure it will be released BEFORE November, being that it's August now, and the phone is ALREADY being sold in CANADA. But don't knock the Torch 9800, it's a great phone as well. At the moment its RIM's BEST touch screen phone, which happens to be a qwerty as well.

I totally agree... I like the Torch very much... but I think I still prefer the original BlackBerry form factor!
I'm just curious to see the OS 6.0 on a non-touchscreen device! I think there are too many "active areas" in the new 6.0 home... and for sure the new browser will be better on the touchscreen version (no pinch to zoom on the 9780!

I totally agree with u, I was obsessed with the torch prior to launch but decided based on other slider reviews to just opt for a standard blackberry without a touchscreen...
Reasons:
1. It has only 2 of the features I want (OS6 and 5mp cam)... That said I just hate, an personally want to kill the person who took away that side convenience key.
2. It still has bold2 parts in it... I mean after almost a year this is all RIM an conjure up!... c'mon!
3. the slider mechanism is cool, but it still has moving parts... the less moving parts the better the phone.
4. Who took away the other type of led flash (the one on the storm) I mean that thing flashes on my g/f phone (Gemini) an I only see a slight trail of the light. I have berry buzz on my 8900 an when it flashes it almost light my room up... so sleeping in the night with vibrate on I can know wen i miss a call.
5. It could have least come with a higher res screen.
6. Apart from the touch screen and OS6 its basically a bold 9700, i don't count the sliding part as both phones has a physical keyboard.
7. Battery, why does these touch screen don't come with a bold battery?
why cant we get at least 2days from the new touchscreens? These batteries are too small!! They keep getting smaller and smaller.
That said not until RIM comes out with new hardware ie; Processor, RAM, high-res screen and memory... [camera is OK at 5mp]. I will stick to this form-factor! The 9780 upgrade is the winner in my book.
So glad i didn't upgrade to the 9700 last year...

True... but you got the "i" and "o" shortcuts to zoom in and out, with the super trackpad (much better than the ball) I guess it would be just fine to navigate in the browser =D.
But you gotta know the 9780 internal hardware is basically the same as 9800....
And yes, the LED light is dim on 9800. - 08-14-2010, 05:45 PM #10
I agree....after test driving and even owning a Torch for a short bit, I see it as just an updated 9700 with a touchscreen.
As far as being glad you didnt upgrade to a 9700, well, you could have, and then when the 9780 is released, you could get one at the off-contract price, and sell your 9700 to cover around half if not more of the cost....essentially getting it for the cost of an early upgrade phone ($275ish out of pocket). Of course you can probably get one for like $99 if youre eligible for a full upgrade when it is released...BB History: Curve 8310 --> Bold 9700 --> Torch 9800 --> Bold 9700 --> Torch 9800 --> - 08-14-2010, 05:48 PM

Depends I guess...ebay is starting to get flooded with them...Im sure youll be able to recoup most of the cost that you pay though...theres ALWAYS someone who cant get one off contract for whatever reason, and will be willing to pay....just beware that if you sell it on ebay, you will most likely have to pay $50-$55 for the listing when its all said and done (they charge 9% of the final selling price, with a maximum of $50).

How sketchy is this GSM hookup? RIM hasn't even officially announced this phone yet, neither has any carrier, so how did this company get a hold of them? The site has no specs on any of the phones, no online orders, one (the 9105) doesn't even have a price. I predict these may be some kind pre-release device, sure, but not legitimately. I'll wait for it to be officially announced somewhere.
