    Default BB 9780 loading 9700 S/W?

Is it even possible to load 9700 software onto 9780? I know it sounds stupid, but I used to OS5 looks and feel (themes, apps etc), and I want the extra memory the 9780 offers.

I might go back to OS6 once the apps and theme maker and themes are populated, but right now, OS5 has my vote.

No it is not possible and the 9780 will never get OS 5.
You cannot install a firmware written for a particular device on a different one

Even if the two devices were exactly a like. RIM will NOT allow cross-installing of OS software.

To satisfy your needs you need to go back to a 9700 for a while and then return to the 9780 OR just be patient as the themes will arrive sooner or later for the 9780.

I can not imagine going back to the 9700 just so I could have different themes. There are some annoying things with the 9780 OS but nothing I can not put up with.
