9700 vs 9780 dilemma
Now that there are rumors of an Oct 21st launch for the 9780 in Canada, I am stuck with a decision to make.
My wife's 8300 is eligiable for an upgrade and I can get the 9700 for $49.95.
I'd obviously rather get an 9780, but won't pay something like $149 for a nearly identical phone.
Any guesses on the launch price of the 9780? - 09-16-2010, 10:34 AM #2
That's going to be about the price of it, nobody really knows yet since a carrier hasn't officially confirmed a release date yet.
If a 5mp camera, double memory, and the ability to efficiently run BlackBerry 6 aren't important to you then the 9700 will be a great device.
It sounds to me though that carriers who will be releasing the 9780 in the next couple months will most likely not release an official build of BlackBerry 6 for the 9700. So if you're uncomfortable upgrading to a leaked, not supported by your carrier, OS then your brand new 9700 will not get the new software. If that doesn't bother you, or you like using un-supported software, then it's not an issue. - 09-16-2010, 11:11 AM #3
The 9780 is both a hardware and software update for the 9700. I owned the 9700 from the day it came out and just got rid of the 9800 when I got the 9780 and the 9780 is quite a upgrade for me!

I'm debating similarly, although without the upgrade offers so with a lot higher prices involved. What it is basically coming down for me is this: if the 9700 gets BB6 (leaked or official) and it runs smoothly before the 9780 launch on Telus, I'm getting the 9700. If the 9700 is still waiting for BB6 when the 9780 launches or if reports are that it is sluggish, then I'll get the 9780.
To me the software is what would make the difference in cost worthwhile so it all comes down to whether the 9700 will support 6 nicely. The camera difference isn't a big deal to me - I use a DSLR most of the time and rarely feel the need to snap quick ones on my phone. And 256MB is plenty for apps for me; just the debate of whether it is plenty for BB6.Blackberry Z10 LE, PlayBook 64GB - 09-18-2010, 06:38 PM #6
I'm going back and forth on this as I love my 9700 but I might buy the 9780 when it comes out. What's not to like about an updated 9700?

Well, I have the 9700, have the 9800 and will be getting the 9780. Just because I'm an addicted geek.

Isn't it amusing how people who claim to not enjoy CB at all simply can't stay away????
It's because it's CRACKBERRY, the BEST BB site....

You should definitely wait and get the 9780. If you decide to get the 9700, you'll end up wanting to get the 9780, even if it is a minor upgrade.

Faster processor? The 9700 has the 624 as does the Torch. What are you expecting?

I dropped the iPhone 4, and came back to BB via a used 9700 bought locally. I'll buy the 9780 because of the upgrade that it is, but until then...the 9700 is fine, and will be even better after the OS6 update is loaded!

I'm still on the fence. I was initially going to get the 9780, but I fell back in live with my 9000. Now that it has OS 5 which I love, and the big keyboard, I don't know if I want to move to the newer device. We will see. I may do it, but right now I am hesitant.

I keep fiddling with the 9700 at the local ATT store and I honestly can't see where the 9700 keys are a step down from the 9000. I work for a living and crash motorcycles for fun and my hands are... imperfect. That said, my 9000 is a tank. It has lived naked in my back pocket for 2 years through all kinds of sweaty attic adventures and survived numerous drops onto tile/concrete. Much of the paint is worn of the case and keys but everything works better than it did when I got it. MY concern with moving to the 9700/9780 is reliability. I'm scared off the 9800 for that reason.

My 9700 is rock solid, but I don't abuse it the way you seem to, so maybe not a complete answer.

I know exactly what u mean... My 8900 has been to **** and back... No case or anything... There is no wayyyy the 9800 would survive 2 yrs with me... I do have a question though for PALOMARTIAN.. With your "imperfect" hands.. How is typing on your 9000? I'm used to my curve kb and scared of going to a bold one...

9780. its a no brainer. you may pay less with the 9700 being dirt cheap, but in the long run, that saved money doesnt matter because (now im assuming data plans in canada are expensive like they are here in the states) you are paying lots of money with the data plan. in the end, it wont really make a difference, and i would just pay the extra 100-150 canadian and get a phone that will have os6 and a webkit browser from day one and be much less of a hassle (with low memory problems....if you download lots of apps or stuff like that)
