Default Wifi with no data plan

Hi I'm sorry if people are annoyed by this thread. I'm pretty sure this question has been asked 1001 times in the past. I've read many posts about this but they seem confusing because there's always someone who said that method does not work.

I've just bought a used Blackberry bold 9700 running OS 6. I'm on T-mobile with no data plan (Yes I know that must have been the silliest thing anyone could have ever done).

I simply want to use wifi whenever i'm in range of a hotspot but don't want to incur charges on data plan. Otherwise my parents would be pretty mad at me for paying for my data charges.

Is it even possible to permanently set my BB to always use wifi (never use data plan) so I don't have to worry about it switching to t-mobile data service? (I read somewhere that this maybe a problem with OS 6)

Please help or direct me to help! thanks a lot!

What are you looking to use the Blackberry for? If just basic calls/texting you can but a data plan is required to get the full use out of a blackberry. Some apps will work:

Thanks! I'm looking to only use the apps listed in the wifi-compatible list. Any help on my original question would be much appreciated !

In the Manage Connections Options you can turn Data Services off. Go to Options > Network and Connections > Mobile Network > Data Services : Off

When I turn data services off I can't use the native browser. Is that what's supposed to happen? I thought the native browser is on the list of wifi compatible apps.

I have no sim and leave it on wifi preferred and data service on as well. Works gr8t, Browser, FB, BeWeather, App world VER 3.1 and Poynt.

If you have SIM with no data plan, you can use what I suggested above. But if it has data plan to be charged per use, then keep it on WiFi only. From my experience, you will need to keep data services on to be able to use some features via WiFi.

But, please look at your PM as I replied in more thorough.

Make sure to turn off mobile network, or go into Options, type in Mobile network, select it and make sure wifi preferred is checked or selected.

Then you'll not have to worry about data charges, but make sure when not using wifi, to turn off data services, so you don't inadvertently rack up a bill.

I thought you could use the wifi only to avoid data. Also, you can see if you get tmobile to block data on your account. They've really changed their model and are trying to nickel and dime folks by putting anyone who has not elected a data plan on a pay per use. if you forget your settings and one of the apps auto connects, you will receive charges. I was able to get a data block on one of my lines (not a blackberry) but it took 3 phone calls.
