Why does the NEW 9780 cost more then the OLD 9700 (Rogers)
So answer this i am with rogers and want a new phone checking out eather the 9780 or 9700 but the 9780 which is new cost less.
The 9700 is on no term 549.99
while the 9780 is no term 499.99
Why is it cheaper and does anyone know how much they will cost with rogers no contract after taxes thanks ? - 11-09-2010, 05:06 PM #2

Cause even though it is a new phone, it's only an upgrade over the older model. Not quite ground braking in it's design nor hardware performance compared to the competition. My guess only.

9780 is pretty much the same as the 9700, only it has:
-more memory
-higher MP camera
-OS 6 (or with some carriers and originally, OS 5)
The price should be the same as the 9700. If it's higher, don't buy it from that carrier.

Nope 9700 is being discontinued by most Canadian carriers. Telus has no more in stock.

I got my 9700 phone for free with T-mobile. I don't understand how a phone such as the 9700 or the latter even costs so much.. I mean its no super computer. My 9700 if I had to buy it would be worth about 50-100 bucks to me. I don't get how these barely internet worthy phones cost so much. Dont get me wrong I love my phone, but If I had to buy it for the prices you are posting I wouldn't even have one.
Thats why Ill never have an iphone (unless free) it cost $6.97us to make in china yet they charge $400 or whatever the price is. so ridiculous
please don't flame me
just my opinion

I think it has to do with certain customer needs. Many companies will lock in on a certain model to support. They won't move onto another model until it has been tested/vetted, so the carriers kinda have them on the hook to buy more of the same devices until they take that next step. When the Tour was new, we needed a World phone for someone who was traveling. The Tour was priced at $499 while the 8830WE was priced at $549...

Answer: developers are not developing apps for OS 6 because the customer base is not large enough. By lowering the price of the Torch, they are trying to encourage the switch to OS 6 which, in turn, will hopefully encourage app developers to develop apps.
