Default upgrading your 9700 os to Os6. it's gotta be done! Next Level experience, seriously

I went from Os5 to Os6.0.0.668 and my 9700 is smokin' hot again! I used BlackBerry Desk Top Manager to get to this os. Sureal! I thought the difference between my 9700 & the  9900 or  9810 was light years away. Really, after the Os upgrade to Os6, the only thing lacking in terms of experience is the touch-screen & compass on the  9900 &  9810! Not bad for a hack who doesn't want to upgrade until  BBX phones show (or BB10 for the politically correct)!!! Let me know your thoughts, fellow CrackHeads????!!!!!!!
P.s. BLACKBERRY is the master platform for communication!!!!!!!

Your a bit behind the times OP. I've been running OS6 on my 9700 for almost a year now. What took you so long?

»I'm always a bit Leary of upgrading to os'like Os6 that had so many bugs & then there's no way back except to downgrade os. I had a majorly protracted experience once with my old  Curve & it left a very bitter taste. Thought I'd post this up though for any other's that are sitting on the fringe, like I was. As it's way better than Os5!!! So, how come you didn't upgrade your handset to one of the gen7 BlackBerry's????

If I had to do it all over again, would probably stayed w. OS5. I don't see any improvement and, like most others, have memory leakage and have to reboot phone every several days/

I upgraded my 9700 to OS6 when it became available. It was very rough at first but got better with higher version numbers.

You lose a little by doing this. OS5 is rock solid and leaves you a lot of memory. Even with shrinking the OS, you still would not have a lot of memory left and there were a lot of leak problems, GPS issues and weird hourglassing. But I didn't go back because I liked the modern feel of OS6 and some of the new featured like email grouping.

But to compare an OS6 9700 to a 9900 is wrong. 9900 is so much faster. Going back to my 9700 feels so much slower. Stuff I didn't notice until I went back to play with it.

Glad you are enjoying it. 9700 is a great device.

there are many pros but also a few cons for os6 on the bold 9700. i have the latest .706 installed.

my PROS:

- UI; everthing looks very sharp and detailed and just modern. i own the bold since its release, means for over two jears and it does not look old or outdatet, much eyecandy and a refreshing feeling while using. the homescreen is interactive, u can turn on/off radio by pressing the clock area or checking your incoming messages by pressing the notifaction area and so on..

2. Functionality (major ones):
- i hated the missing function of adding multiple pictures to an email in OS5, sometimes i have to attach 10 or more pictures. everytime i had to press add picture, select memory card, scroll through the endless list of very small thumbnails etc.. just annoying and very inefficient! now just navigate to the pictures folder, press and hold the shift key, mark multiple pictures, long press the trackpad and send as email...tadaa all pics are attached! also for sending pictures via BBM or WhatsApp (in this app it was more frustrating because it tooks nearby 5 minutes until the app had finished loading the pics on the SD Card), on OS6 it takes you directly to the picture folder and u can easily select one. great plus for me.

- universal search is a killer function. i can search for everything directy by typing on the homescreen. you want to search for an email, just type it..you want to search for the memopad or for a memo, just type it etc. great increase on using your smartphone in a fast and effective way.

- Browser: web pages load up very fast and the browser automatically generates the column view by just zooming in to the area u want. the navigation cursor is very smooth and web pages are lookin nice and clear. now i dont have to use opera mobile for having the possibiltiy of tabs, the os6 webkit browser already has this function.
i often watch streaming videos on youtube, it was so annoying on os5, that the videos were constantly lagging even if i was connected to a wifi network. no lagging or buffering with the webkit browser!

- social feeds: i use it for RSS feeds. simple and good. no more need for browser bookmarks, just add your favourite news feeds and everthing will be fine, i even get a small preview of the news and can decide if want to continue reading the article.

- app support:
i love wikitude for meeting new BBM contacts in my home city. There is no OS5 support for this app. so another plus!

and now the CONS:

- homescreen view
i only use ALL and FAVOURITES but every third time i grab my phone it is in the MEDIA or RECENT View, i just dont want to use them. would be fine if rim will implement the function to turns those off just like on os7. i know, there are custom themes, but i am not a fan of them because there is at least one bug in every theme.

- browser: i like the browser for the speed but hate it for its annoying "Page is to big to load" error. usually seen while loading non mobile pages.

-calender:
the calender on OS6 is a real downgrade! it does not show the current week. also the week view is not clear enough. DISLIKE!

- stability: this is the main contra for OS6. memory leak memory leak and more memory leaks. i shrunk the os prior installing. after a restart it gives me 80mb of app memory. but within just 1 day it drops down to 50-60, then it looks stable for the next few hours but soon drops a few megs again. this is causing hourglasses and always a feeling like "hmm does it leaks, how about the app memory..and i see me constantly checking the memory status...

conclusion:
OS6 is newer and looks good, has a few killer functionalities but the feeling of using a rocksolid smartphone is gone.
you can compare it to windows XP (OS5) vs. windows Vista (OS6).
XP had no eye candy, no transitions etc. but it was fast and reliable and needed only little ressources. Vista comes with a new graphical UI and looks nice...at the first look! after using it a few month i made the experience of tons of bugs, sometimes less productivity... but it has a few good functions like the sidebar, toggling applications (with previews on the dock) etc.

Therefore i cant say which one is better the only solution deciding of sticking with OS5 or 6 is to upgrade to a OS7 device i think but i love my bold 9700 and hey, isnt it cool to have the ability of toggling through two operating systems?! everytime i get annoyed of os6 i downgrade to 5 nd everytime i get bored of os5 i upgrade to 6 within just 20 minutes. the bold 9700 is a unique device and lets the user decide, which operating systems suits best!

thx for reading

I still got the shrunken OS 6 on my deactivated and still used 9700. It runs fine as a WIFI blackberry and I love it regardless. No leaks, barely any apps at all on it too. I used it to record a videos and also to upload some too. I even used it for a tutorial video recorder when handling my 9900. It all depends and drills down to one's uses.

I have been using OS6 on my 9700 since the first build was release back in december 2010... it has been an ups and downs journey on each and every build version upgrades. and it seems like memory leaks, battery issue among others will always present but again i am very much happy now 1 year later with one of the latest build that is .668.... it is THE best for me so far, so i would definitely recommend this one particular version for those 9700 users who wants to start using OS6

cheers to the 2k12

»hold on a second Genius of Genius' (sir Root Brian): did you say 'shrunken' variety???? Is this different to the .668 that BlackBerry Desk Top Manager offers one to upgrade? If so, let me know how to get it & the steps for manually loading, please. Is it dramatically different from the box standard original .668? Please advise with as much details as possible (anyone! The more information the better!)
-many thanks ARQ

there is no 'shrunken' OS 'out of the box'. U have to shrink the os prior installing or after the installation via direct shrink on the phone with the BBOSS tool. U can delete all unnecessary things like stock wallpapers, ringtones etc. U can have your ringtones stored on the SDcard. After removing the crap on the phone storage u will get at around 100megs of free app memory but its still leaking. I am at the 3rd day without battery pull on my bold and the memory is at 39mb atm. After a battery pull i have 79megs free (a few apps are installed)

I updated daddies curve 9300 3G to os6,too and its very interesting that there is NO mem leak on his phone. So this prob does only occur on the bold 9700?!

Hope RIM will solve it in a new versions.Ilm very glad woth OS 6,and tough theres a mem leak,I steel will remain with OS 6.And by the way,you don't need to pull your baterry every time, just restart your device with "ctrl, shift, del" and thays it.

yes, i know that but it gives me a better 'feeling' by doing a hard reset instead of the soft reset (CTRL,SHIFT,DEL)

and i dont think that RIM will ever solve the memleak problem, because its surely some weird architecture bug like on the bold 9000
