Tethering?
I tried this once with my old 8900 on EDGE, and it was so slow, I immediately gave up. I was trying some shareware program then to do it.
Now that I have a 3G 9700, I wanted to try it again. Did some googling and was surprised to see that there is an IP modem icon on the DM that I have never seen. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program (and that was fun because some installs and the windows 7 registry don't get along...keys get created without owners) Eventually got it off of there and back on (a fight both ways) and...still no icon. Found this Ip_modem-configuration file discussed at some length here and elsewhere. It already says "true" under t-mobile. In fact , "false" only appeared on some east asian companies.
Don't know why I don't have that icon..that was the only thing I found to try.
What are the other options? Is it quick enough to even make it worth the effort? - 06-02-2010, 07:49 PM #2
Download a program called revouninstaller pro, use it to uninstall DM, it will scan your system for regfiles and other misc crap that installs can leave behind. Reboot and reinstall the latest version downloaded directly from blackberry.com and you shouldnt have any issues.

Make sure you install your BlackBerry's software on the computer as well, otherwise you won't have the IP modem icon. Not just DM, but the actual phone software as well. Tethering works very well on T-Mobile in my experience, and allowed me a whole lot of convenience when I wanted to do my work in a park instead of at work or on campus.

Tried that revo uninstall program to remove the DM. Then I reinstalled and got the usual flak from the installer, but it went on. Amazingly, the IP modem icon there! I was amazed. I tried it and it worked. Of course, my phone is connected to wifi at the moment. I will have to try later to see how usable it is on EDGE/3G.
Thanks for the tip.
FYI, I was going to try installing the 9700 OS software as was also suggested here, but it was not necessary. - 06-03-2010, 10:54 AM #6
If you're using a mac (OS X)... all you need to do is install BBDM... it installs the proper modem script that you need. Then you never even need to launch or use BBDM...
Depending on carrier, just enter the right number, username & password... often those last two are either <blank> or 'gprs' in each, like with T-Mo US.
Can then tether via BT or USB.Bold 9700
OS 5.0.0.680
