    Exclamation SIM-less

    Hi,

Device: Bold 9700 - running the latest official 5.x release.

I've just changed my phone but I thought I could still use my 9700 using my wifi.

There is still a SIM in the phone but the Mobile Network module is disabled - WIFI is enabled.

I can connect to Twitter on the phone and ping my router so network connectivity is fine - BUT the browser refuses to connect to any page; Facebook gives a cannot connect to server error.

I know I was using BIS mail before but is there anyway I can use it to send / recieve mail to pop mailbox?

    Any advice welcome!

    Cheers
    Lee

not without a SIM card with a BIS data addition.

You wont be able to set it up or use apps unless you have a sim with BIS active.

The best way if this is now a spare phone will be pay as you go with BIS.

Depends which APN the app uses to access the network, if the app connects via the blackberry apn then it won't work without the sim card, however it will connect via wifi but requires a live sim card to do this.

    You changed phone then?

OK - so is there a way you can change the APN that the app uses and "force" it to use the APN that Twitter uses?

Yeah - changed phones - now got a HTC Desire HD (Android).

Generally this is built into the app itself, which twitter app are you using?

The official Twitter client from RIM.

    Optional, but not needed.

The official apps from RIM require a data plan to operate properly. There are other apps that can also use wifi, but most of them won't work without any data plan. I know this because I tried it without a SIM just out of curiosity.

There is an app that forces most 3p apps to use the carrier connection (can't remember the name, though), so there might be one that forces them to use Wifi.
