Signal problems
I am using a Bold 9700 on Orange in the UK, should be using the latest version of the OS (.586)
I have a big problem with data services, even with signal at full bars. The browser gets stuck on Requesting and then takes ages to load or will just return a server unresponsive message. Also during this time BBM won’t send anything and Facebook won’t load either.
Sometimes dialling a phone number (I usually just dial 150) will immediately return call failed, even when there is full signal reported. Sometimes though the phone will connect and this then will sometimes force the data connection to work and I’ll suddenly get e-mails and BBMs through. I have also found out that some incoming calls are sent straight to answer phone even when I have full signal.
None of these problems happen all the time, but they are fairly frequent and have been happening on and off for the six months I’ve had the phone. I used to use the phone in Oxford which often has poor signal coverage so put it down to that but the problems are still occurring now I’ve moved to London.
I’ve tried pulling the battery, this usually provides a temporary fix but sometimes the problems kick straight back in after half hour or so, as I said it seems to be fairly random. It’s getting extremely irritating though as I need to be able to rely on my phone!
Anyone got any ideas? - 08-09-2010, 12:07 PM

Are you on Orange, I've tried running the update but it says I have the latest version....

phone was locked to another network, but got it unlocked and im using a orange contract sim card with bb data.
the latest firmware version from orange is the version you got, I wiped the phone and installed the new .862 firmware from this site, which isn't made for orange branded phone's but it works fine. You'll just lose the apps that orange handsets comes with. - 08-09-2010, 12:18 PM #5
I once used .586 with Orange UK and I always had problem with the signal. Turned out that my SIM card was old and did not support 3G (weird, huh?). Then someone suggested me to get a Orange 3G SIM card and after that everything is fine. An Orange 3G SIM card literally has '3G' written behind it.
Also, it might worth updating the OS to the latest version. You can find the link from this forum. Orange UK is rather slow in releasing OS updates. You can use OS updates from other operators. Fine for me. I do it all the time. - 08-09-2010, 12:22 PM

I've definitely got a 3G SIM, it's written on it, plus it does sometimes work at 3G speeds so the phone is obviously capable of it.
I could update software but I'm hesistant to do anything that might void the warranty in case I have to send the phone back to Orange. It seems like this is a major issue with the phone though if other people are having the problem too. - 08-09-2010, 12:39 PM

OK, I will try this when I find my Blackberry to PC cable and see if it fixes it. Is it easy to revert to the Orange version if I need to and will this invalidate my warranty?

Reverting back to the Orange version will be as easy. Just one thing, though, I once read somewhere that UMA Orange only works with the Orange version of the OS. I never tried UMA so I don't know if this is true.
Anyway, I have used Blackberry with Orange, O2, and Vodafone. Turned out that Orange is the least reliable one. But this absolutely depends on many technical factors. It might worth checking if you live near to an Orange BTS.
