Default Question for 9700 on Tmobile

So I know that you need the data plan for the 9700 for tmobile unless you by it retail. But how do they know if you buy it retail?
Because I have 5 phones on my contract and I was wondering if i could take one of their upgrades and use it on a different line and if it wouldnt need any data plan. If anyone knows if this will work please let me know

I know alot of people have been saying that a BB is useless without data service, but my son has been bothering me about this phone and I really want to get it for him but without the data plan. So please help me!!! =]

As soon as you put the sim card in the phone and power it up the IEME is passed onto the carrier, so yes they know what phone you have. Doesn't matter what line you do an upgrade on once the phone is on the line they know...

Yes i know that, but if you buy it retail then you wont have to pay for the data plan.

So you have money to buy it retail, but don't want to pay 30 a month for data? Or just don't want your son to use the net?

    12 months x 30 is 360...

Retail is what on a 9700? More than that I am sure...

Just get the data plan and block it? Still saving...

Without the data plan it will function like many other phones 1/4 the price. You would have limited apps, no net, no email and no BlackBerry Messenger. You could sync the calendar and contacts with Outlook through Desktop Manager and use it to make phone calls. That's about it.

How old is your son? You buy the phone and have him pay for the data plan. If he is not old enough to have a job than in my opinion he has no need for a BB 9700.

I'm prety sure that's nul and void once you switch it to a different line but you'd have to ask a TMO rep.

t-mobile reps can see the history of where the phone is bought and if it was bought with a contract, even if it was switched to another line, it is still coded as bought with a contract. no way around having the data plan.
