OS 6 ---> to OS 5: Who has done it?
I've seen a few mentions of downgrading to OS 5. I love 6, but having to pull the battery daily is starting to outweigh the benefits.
Has anyone gone from 6 back to 5? Anything to watch out for? I plan on shrinking 5 with BBoss first. How does this downgrade effect my current apps? - 04-16-2012, 02:22 PM #2
I went back to 5. I didn't need to shrink it, I have about 85mb free internally even after I loaded all my apps. Though I only have about 5 other apps other than what was bloat.
Some of the apps did not work properly afterwards, pdf documents to do comes to mind. I had to reload and re-enter my registration info. Other apps didn't work. I assumed it was not compatible with 5.
But all in all, I am glad I downgraded. It is faster and I don't have to do any battery pulls except for the usual loading a new app, etc. - 04-16-2012, 05:08 PM #3

Maybe u will be better off with a hybrid that helps to keep memory leak to a minimum

been there, done that. i tried official, leaked and hybrids. found too many dropped calls, tried changing radio files, still no good. memory wasnt too bad using hybrids. but battery life was awful thus me going back to os5. if i would see the battery life/lack of dropped calls i get in os6 i would go back in a heartbeat

Can I do the downgrade via bb boss? I was to shrink 5 first. Do I need to uninstall OS 6 from the PC first?

I ended up using desktop manager. I uninstalled all versions of 6.0 via add/remove programs. I was able to find the correct version of 5.0 in DM and "downgraded". That part went smoothly; took awhile...but it went fine. The phone booted up and I was able to zip around. I did get a java error after DLing appworld. (Random note: Anytime I change my OS, AppWorld and Facebook icons are gone...but the apps are still on the phone....and I still have to redownload.) It took 3 battery pulls to get the phone to boot up again...I was getting a little nervous. It kept getting 99% of the way there, full status bar...then it would stop.
I installed a shrunken version of OS5 and I'm sitting at 90 megs free. It's been at that level since last night. So it appears no leaks. Fingers crossed. I had to update a few apps that weren't working, but that's been about it.
So far, so good. - 04-30-2012, 02:00 AM #13
I just updated from 5 to 6 after avoiding the update for a long time. Came with 5 when I first bought it a couple years or so ago, and I preferred 5 to 6, based on differences in interface.
Eventually, OS 5 started bugging out bad and crashing the phone from time to time (needed weird combinations of battery pulls, removal of sim card, and removal of SD card to get it going again), and was crashing all the time trying to use the video camera at the end. 5 also had a very buggy voice recorder that didn't stop recording when you told it to, until it eventually crashed the program.
After figuring out and rearranging OS 6 in the last day, I see OS 6 is much better, although it obviously uses more harddrive space.
I wouldn't go back to 5 after updating.
(Edit)
Btw, doing a hard boot took literally 10 minutes on OS 5, and now takes 2-3 minutes with OS 6.Last edited by ooghost1oo; 04-30-2012 at 02:16 AM.
