No signal/bad reception
I have to 9700 and usually have really good signal. The last couple days i have noticed that my signal is horrible, and a lot of times the phone goes into sos? does anyone know what could be causing this all of the sudden?

If you usually have a good signal, its probably a temporary carrier problem. Call them and report it, they might credit your account.

Eww, that could do it if you aren't careful

Antenna is at the bottom of the board...

Is your new battery cover made out of plastic? I read that if your battery cover is made out of steel/metallic of some sort, then you will have a very poor reception.

Might just be working on a tower to update it or fix something....or could be related to the bezel and what not that you replaced, which I have heard causes problems...I would call first and see what your carrier says first and if no headway is made that way, try taking back off those aftermarket pieces and putting it back to stock to see if that helps...also don't take it in to a carrier as switching stuff like that IIRC voids the warranty.
Good luck

Ive had this problem for awhile now, as well as my phone constantly freezing. when I called about a month ago they said they are testing out 4g in some areas[just so happens my area was on of them] as well as fixing a few towers. Since then, my phone still has little to no service at all..in a place that had it all the time.
I was on the phone yesturday when out of no where my phone shut off during conversation, that promted me to go into the repair store to get it checked out.
They ran a test and told me things were fine, BUT the test showed that the ANTENNA was OUT OF DATE. so with that they ordered a replacement phone, which im picking up otmorrow. they said it was out of date, because the towers in my area have been upgraded and no longer capable with my current antenna.
If I were you Id take it in, and mention to them to test the Antenna. - 09-08-2010, 10:08 PM #21

From the "other" Blackberry Forum, I learned that you must ensure that the bottom two screws are TIGHTLY holding the midcase to the bezel. Remove the back battery cover, and see if you can squeeze the midcase and bezel and if there is any play. While you're doing that, see if your signal improves.
Good luck! - 09-14-2010, 01:21 PM #23
OK, after reading through the posts I see a few possible things it could be.
SOS usually means that there is signal, but there is a problem validating your phone to the network. So, you can only make Emergency (SOS) calls. The SIM card is what links your phone to your account. Think of it as it's ID card for the network.
If you are out of your providers coverage area, and do not have roaming. You will get an SOS.
If you are in your providers coverage area and get an SOS, it means your service (Account) can't be validated.
Here's what the possibilities are:
-The SIM card is loose in the slot. This is the most common cause of intermittent SOS errors. When you put the phone back together, you may not have got it in there right, or where it's just barely making contact. Try taking it out, make sure none of the PINS it connects to on the phone are bent and put it back in.
-A bad SIM card. If the SIM is bad, you usually get a constant SOS. But, if it's going bad, it can be intermittent. This is a 5 min, FREE replacement at your wireless store. Just go in, have them replace your SIM and see if that fixes it.
-A bad SIM slot on the phone. OK, this is how my 9000 died. I had several SIM cards go bad in a row, then it would not take any SIM card. Since you just took the phone apart to change out the bezel, it's possible you didn't get something back together right. You may have even damaged it beyond repair (If it's shorting something out)>
-A bad or lose antenna. This is RARE for the SOS. Because, SOS means it's talking to the network but can't validate the account and you can only make emergency calls. When the SOS is showing, try calling your Carriers support # from the phone (For AT&T that's 611, I think most carriers use that). If you connect, the antenna is fine.
-A problem with the towers in your area not validating your phone to the network. Again, this is rare, but happens and can only be resolved with a call to your carrier. - 09-14-2010, 07:37 PM #24
Open SetUp folder, open Manage Connections/Pulse Icon, scroll down to Mobile Network Options and open,
make sure Data Services is ON, While Roaming ON, Connection Preference to Mobile Net Work Preferred, Network Selection Mode set to Automatic,
if you change it to Manual you can find local towers and see which is strongest.Michaelaw (The Practical BBQ'r!)
