YES! Had this issue! It's a problem with your headphone jack. There is a small metal clip in there that making the phone think you're still in headset mode.
take the headphones and put em in and out a few times. And look inside and you'll see the gold bar just inside the hole. Give that a poke with the headphone jack.
Had this EXACT issue! Some tour & storm owners also had this problem I found.

That's a legit warranty issue due to hardware. Get an exchange.

Only happened the one time to me. Ive used my headphones countless times since, no problem.
I had the option to send it in for repair. That meant getting a loner phone while it was gone. Since i knew what the issue was, Im ok sticking with it for now. There is a year warranty so if it happens again, I'll ship it off.

i had this issue too. I called at&t and they told me that i would have to give my phone back to the store then they would send me a new one because the store was out of stock. I dont know if it is worth no having my phone for a few days or just dealing with the issue and keep on removing and replacing the headphones to get it working

+1 here too. Plugging in and out some headphone seemed to fix things, at least for now.

I tried the suggested fixes but nothing worked, but I found something that did:
I got the following:
*Canned air
*High purity alchohol (i used 100% since it was available, but electronics grade alchohol which is about 90 % and available at places like RadioShack should work)
*Small precision screw driver
*lint free tissue (Kimwipes)
-I wrapped a strip of tissue around the screwdriver about four of five times and ensured there was enough padding for it to fit a little snugly into the jack.
-Soaked the tissue wrapped screwdriver in the alcholol,
-Squeezed out excess alcholol so the tip wasn't dripping.
-Inserted the screwdriver all the way into the jack and turned the screwdriver around about ten times,
-Removed the screwdriver and immediately dried it with canned air.
It took a number of trials, but enventually it worked. - 04-09-2012, 05:42 AM #15
Either:-
1) There's a hardware issue e.g. dry-joint or excessively high value pull-up resistor on the headset socket resulting in the voltage on the headset present/not present control line to wander about.
2) The media player is doing something weird, as it's an application that can control the headset socket. In the case of the Original Poster, the fault occurred immediately after adding a wmv file. However, it's almost certainly because the headset jack was used to listen to the video in stereo.
Doing a full software upgrade from V5 to V6 didn't fix the problem on my friend's 9700, suggesting that it's not a software issue.Last edited by Nigel Kinbrum; 04-11-2012 at 02:33 AM.
