Your sure they are text messages??? Open your Messages icon (if you have combined Messages/SMS and MMS messsages) and press the letter "U" - stands for Unread... if this does not show any then press the Menu > View Folders > open the SMS Coversations, SMS Inbox, SMS Outbox and SMS SIM Card Inbox to see if there are any in those... use the letter "U" it helps.

Then check the other folders... it must not be text messages.

Another thing you could do is take a screen shot of your device so we can all see the image... I'd recommend using http://www.thetechmogul.com/CaptureIt/CaptureIt.jad

That does look correct if you have your SMS and regular Messages separated.
Two things you could do... you might consider upgrading your OS... what OS are you running on your device???
The other thing to consider is just to clear your entire SMS database, if you don't need your SMS message history... you can connect your device to your PC, start Desktop Manager (DM) > first backup your device... then go back into Backup/Restore > Advanced > select SMS database (I don't remember the exact name of the file, but you will know) in the list on the right, then push the Clear button.
***Remember: This will completely clear that database, so that is why you should do a full backup first. *** - 04-28-2010, 01:22 PM

Check message folders. My mom's bberry had the same issue. Now, do you have sms being saved to a media card? check that if so
