I'm on AT&T, but my OS is a version 5.x that I had to download from CSL in Hong Kong (because I need Chinese input for my work).
By chance, does anyone know if OS 6.x now includes Chinese input, or am I still stuck with having to download my OS from the Hong Kong carrier (which is waaaay behind on OS upgrades)?
Thanks! - 04-28-2011, 12:56 PM #28"Son, no one gives a *hit about all the things your cell phone does. You didn't invent it, you just bought it. Anybody can do that."

Yeah I just launched the Desktop Manager and it has updated to version 6.0.2.44. Although connecting to my BB 9700, it still shows connecting and hasn't changed.
Currently can't open the e-mail app or SMS app on the BB.
I'll try restarting my computer again and give it another try.Last edited by phantomAI; 04-28-2011 at 01:12 PM.

Here's my fear. I have Blackberry Bridge on my phone so that I can connect to my Playbook. (But wait! AT&T hasn't released that yet!!) Exactly.
The one that I have is from Sprint originally (I think) and was for the Storm, but it works great on my phone. I use that bridge daily, and I would be SO pissed if I lost it.
I wonder, if I do the update, will AT&T block this app? Do I have to download all of my apps again? What do you think? - 04-28-2011, 01:37 PM

Look around here- there was a "workaround" posted on the blog the other day for the ATT bridge issue.

i don't know about at&t releases but i've been using the leaks and took out all the language except for chinese. if you decided to shrink your OS, make sure you keep "monotype" font... you need this font to see chinese text
and yes, you can type in chinese... i've been using cangjie but might install the strokes and use that instead...Unlocked Blackberry 9700 - 6.0.0.668

If I don't shrink and just DL the new O/S 6, how will it affect functionality? I currently have about 90 MB of free space. Thanks.

You can DL and run the RIM Desktop Manager for Mac. It's available on the RIM site--look for it.
It works pretty seamlessly, but be warned, it may not restore all the third party apps. With apps that you get through the BB store, there's no problem--you jus re-DL them, and the same with some other commercial sites, but you should have saved copies of the cod files of the others so you can reload them if necessary, and I don't know how you do that with a Mac. I have Windows, as well, and can save them by backing up the BB through BBSAK 1.9 or higher, and then restore them in Windows.
If you only have a Mac, you can run Windows (if you have a copy) using a virtual machine like Fusion or Parallels, but be further warned that you won't be able to do the OS upgrade, itself, on a VM, at least not in a Fusion VM. (This is a known bug which hasn't been resolved.) You can, however, use BBSAK in Windows to back up and restore your third party apps manually. - 04-28-2011, 10:18 PM #42

You can install any OS6 release for the "9700" on your "9700". It does not matter if it is a "leak" or an "official" or a "hybrid". As long as it is for the 9700 it will work on the 9700. You just need to make sure that you follow instructions and always delete any vendor.xml file.
Also......as suggested many times......it will help if you take the time to shrink OS6 before you install on your 9700. You will find much more information on installing OS's and shrinking in the Leaked/Beta OS forum area.
I (and many others) would suggest the OS6 .534. It seems to be getting the best overall performance.
Hope this helps!!1Thanked by:FullmetalBBer (04-29-2011)

So what do you do when you download it and it won't update in the Desktop Manager or the Loader.exe file? I'm sorry if i sound really annoying posting the same thing over and over again but no one is giving me anything thats actually helping me.

If you have downloaded the OS and installed it on your PC then.........
(I am assuming that you have downloaded and installed OS6 on your PC. I am discussing procedures below using Loader.exe to install on BB......not Desktop Manager.)
You need to go here and have a look:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files
You should find one........and only one folder.......something like this:
9700XXXXX_v6.0.0.5XX_P6.6.0.XXX
Click on that folder..........that contains your OS6 files (assuming it has v6.0.0.5XX in it).
If all this looks ok.....then go here: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
You should see a vendor.xml file. Delete it.
You can now load at this point (if you have made all your backups)..........but...........
I would suggest (and most here would suggest) that you "shrink" the OS6 before loading. This can be done with BB Boss. You will find more info on BB Boss and other similar programs in the "Leaked/Beta" OS forum area.
You should be following the guide by "elite1" that I posted on the previous page.
Once you have backed up everything you need to back up, deleted your vendor.xml, shrunk the OS6, you are now ready to install.
(I personally would do a complete "wipe" using BBSAK or BB Boss before loading the new OS. Do not bother wiping if you do not see a new OS to install. You need to go back to the beginning and first get a new OS installed on your PC.)
Now your are ready to install. Go here:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
(your Desk Top Manager, BBSAK, BB Boss, and related programs should all be closed at this point)
Click on the "Loader" file.
NOTE: I have given a little extra info here for you to use but you should be using the guide/outline I posted by elite1 on the previous page .....or....similar instructions. You should make sure that you have backed up your data using Desktop Manager and performed backups for programs allowing backup options (BBM, BeWeather, Quicklaunch, etc.). You can also backup Apps using BBSAK or BB Boss.
Hope all this helps!!Last edited by duckduke; 04-29-2011 at 07:12 AM.

Running OS 6 now , had to install twice since the first time I tried to upgrade I got an error. BB in general seems faster, my 3G connection is a little spoty now.
