Driftwood? Onxy?
Whats the difference between the two, will it be like how the first gen curve like 8310,8320 like that just between tmo and att>? I dont think they would have a different name for the same device look aat the 83xx series they didnt have different names but they all had different features, same with the 8900 Tmobiles version has UMA and ATT's does not they didnt have different names and there on 2 different carriers

People have their facts mixed up about the Driftwood. Its not what people think. Just have patience, more information will come soon.

They are the same phone, though the Onyx is essentially an updated Curve, and has no UMA or WI-FI. From my understanding, the Driftwood is going to T-Mobile, and has a tentative September release date. It's meant to compete with AT&T's BB Bold. The Onyx is going to AT&T around the same time. I was going to upgrade to the 8900, but I'll wait it out and get the Driftwood instead. I hope they change the name by the release date.

Think your completely and utterly wrong there...its in no way shape or form an updated Curve...the onyx that is..its part of the Bold line up so will have 3G, Wifi and is similar to the Bold but probably a smaller, thinner version of the Bold.
Just waiting to see when its coming out as ill be getting the Onyx then the new better version of the Bold. - 07-29-2009, 12:15 PM #10
The Onyx is an evolved Bold. I don't know what the Driftwood is but I hope it's also as evolutionary and awe-inspiring as the Onyx.

When the first driftwood was rumored. It was suppose to be a touchscreen device with a qwerty keyboard below it without any trackball or trackpad.

Yes, the Onyx/Merlin will have both Wi-Fi and 3G. There shouldn't be any confusion as the above poster, parroman, says. The Driftwwod is the same as the Onyx but, as Crucial_Xtreme says, with UMA. Period.

Best bet is to wait for them to release then you can get a full specs release and compare the two phones...for me i am going with the att simply because they put more into their coverage and the onyx would be the better phone for the area where i live...so i am gonna wait for my sleek sexy black onyx!!

Patience is not a word in CB vocabulary... Speculation, guestimation, rumors, flaming - sounds so homey
TBZ said the difference has to do with battery and/or processor, as well as layout of the SD card slot. Could all this be related to who gets Onyx and who gets a Driftwood? For example, one being for the Americas market, the other for Europe?

This is indeed a MAJOR disappointment if it pans out that T-Mobile is about to put out yet another Blackberry without 3G. I can see 2 scenarios driving this:
1) T-Mobile is purposely trying to push their customers away from RIM and to Android Clique etc. They have all these Blackberry customers that are paying $19.99 and of that some of the $$ is going to RIM. Much better for T-Mobile's bottom line to make people switch away from the Blackberry since they would lose their grandfathered $19.99 and go to a more expensive $24.99 and of that $24.99 it all goes in T-Mobile's pocket with none being sent to RIM.
2) T-Mobile & RIM ran into the often rumored problems of getting 3G and UMA to play nice together. They were unable to resolve these issues and made the decision to keep UMA on the device and dump the 3G. - 09-30-2009, 09:29 AM #25Stellar season for Captain Serious - An Olympic gold medal, Conn Smythe and Stanley Cup winner.
