Buying a used blackberry
hey, i'm planning on buying a used blackberry from an ad on the classifieds. Is there anything i should look out for when buying a used blackberry. Anything i should try/test out before i actually buy it? Its a 9700 by the way.

Make sure its unlocked and make sure the IMEI and PIN are not blacklisted. Best way would be to meet at a carrier store

Also make sure the video/camera function, wifi and bluetooth works, including all keys and the speakers (speakerphone, headset).
Don't pay until EVERYTHING tested works. You don't want to be ripped off. If the seller is hesitant, do not buy. This is a warning sign to look out for.

go under Options>Device & Status Infomation then type "TEST" without the quotes. This will take you to the ' Device Self Test Application' which let's you test damn near everything the device does.

Also try typing BUYR at the device screen. It will show you how long the deviced been used. The rest, GPS, outer body, the warranty seal at the back etc etc

Also... If they would be courteous, the best way would be for them to show you the diagnostic test results. It will tell you everything.
On another note: 9700's are so amazing. Is it a " BlackBerry" or a "WhiteBerry?"

Also as mentioned above get them to send pics of the battery and phone water sensor. The more pics the better.
Now I know people can be dishonest, but this site is the safest imo to purchase.

Thank you all for all the help
I bought it today and seems to be fine, but just the keyboard bothers me a little, at some areas of the keyboard, i have to press hard to get the letter to appear, but other parts of the keyboard, the appear if i press softly..i don't know if i have to get the keyboard replaced, but it doesn't seem to be a big issue. Everything else works, so i'm happy with the phone. Typing in BUYR and TEST into the status screen really helped also
and Evan_O, its a blackberry
Thank you all for your help, I really appreciate it - 01-05-2011, 11:18 PM

Glad it is working correctly.
I would hit your local retail store of what carrier you use, should find a USB BB cable there.

GNU/Linux distros of choice: Ubuntu, Mint (or anything based on debian that's still geared towards beginners and isn't too bloated).
