I know it's not a 9700 but during the days of having a 9000 with 30MB free on a fresh install was a pain. Massive shrinking was needed there, I got rid of just about everything on that phone and it ran like a charm for me. Shrink. I do it agressively for friends and with all their personal data loaded they have have 90-100 MB free. Not too bad. I use BBHtool and it works well. Very simple to use.

I loved my bold 9700. It was my first bb and was amazing. I must admit it got laggy with OS 6 and lots of apps, so I only kept the important ones and restart like once a week and then it worked well.

I got a used bold 9900 off kijiji for $200, if you can find a good one for around that its worth it because resale will be almost the same price when BB10 is out
